Write an analysis of one of the characters in The Last Samurai. Although the two main characters are obvious choices, many of the supporting characters are more complex than they first appear (e.g., Omura, Colonel Bagley, Zeb Gant). Focus on the ways in which the character represents his culture or the ways in which he represents a form of masculinity. Is he a warrior? Is he influenced by notions of what role war, and warriors, play in his culture? Examine the connections between the gender role and the cultural context. In addition to analysis of plot and ideology, consider formal elements: How is the character costumed? How is he lit? How do the mannerisms of the actor convey character? How does dialogue reveal aspects of his identity?
