– The actions and words of the Prophet are recorded in the Hadith literature. Every Hadith report has two parts — Isnad and Matan.- Isnad is the chain of transmission from the time of the Prophet until the time of the Hadith collector. A geneological study was made of the people in the transmission sequence to determine if the chain was authentic or it was invalid.- Matn is the actual text of the statements and actions of the Prophet.- There are 2 kinds of Hadith.- In regular Hadith the narration consists of the interaction of Prophet Muhammad with the environment that surrounded him—i.e. his companions and society.- In Hadith al-Qudsi (sacred Hadith) the statements of the Prophet relate to his spiritual quest and his search for the Truth (Haqq) and ultimate reality (Haqiqat).
