False information and hoaxes “Whoever engages in any conduct with intent to convey false or misleading information under circumstances where such information may reasonably be believed” (LII U.S. Code 18). The actus reus of this code is the criminal act of malicious deception used to scam individuals with false information. The mens rea is the intent and knowledge of giving false information. One must be acting with intent to defraud individuals. Many acts of false information are crimes that have a financial gain.
