Write a persuasive essay, students should demonstrate understanding of the current tribal gaming compact controversy between the state of Oklahoma and gaming tribes who are located in Oklahoma. Additionally, students should summarize the McGirt v. Oklahoma case being argued in front of the Supreme Court in October, 2020. For part one of the essay, students should define what a compact is, and then summarize the state of Oklahoma’s position on the compact’s renewal, as well as the position of at least one tribe relative to the renewal of the tribal/state gaming compact that went into place in 2004. Students should point out flaws in either the state or tribe’s point of view and offer a suggestion for resolving the conflict between the two sovereigns. For part two of the essay, students should demonstrate an understanding of the development of the McGirt v. Oklahoma case which emerged after the Supreme Court deadlocked on Murphy v. Oklahoma (aka Murphy v. Sharp). After demonstrating what is at stake and the impact any decision might have on tribal nations and the state of Oklahoma, students should make an educated guess about what they think will happen in this case.
