Word clouds have been described as “a gateway drug to textual analysis.”  Discuss the implications of this statement with close reference to any single poem by Kenneth Slessor comparing it to any graphic representation in the larger body of poetry produced by any word-cloud engine. [Provided with a quantity of text, word cloud engines produce graphical representations of it based on the most common words. The more frequently a word appears in the text, the larger it appears relative to other words on the screen.] You have two choices: 1.      1.    You can use the word cloud provided below. It is a “randomised” representation of Kenneth Slessor’s poetry. It has been produced by pasting every word of every Slessor poem contained in the Clement Semmler text we used in Week 2 into Word it Out https://worditout.com/ and then requesting a word cloud based on that input. If you choose this option please be sure to indicate this explicitly in a note at the beginning of your assignment. 2.    Alternatively, you can produce your own word cloud using some other word cloud engine (like Wordle) http://www.wordle.net/ . If you decide to do this, you might begin by playing with different visualizations of the data, comparing them in preparation for this essay task. But the word cloud you submit with your assignment must be based on the same text input as the one I have provided – that is, by pasting every word of every Slessor poem contained in the Clement Semmler text into the text box of the word-cloud engine. [It must not be customized. It must be randomised.]  Question 2. It has been said that Slessor’s poetry is “characteristically set in the absolute present, both past and future almost unknowable.” Discuss this claim with detailed reference to 3 or 4 of Slessor’s poems.   Question 3. Of the protagonist in Thea Astley’s novel, Girl with a Monkey, it has been observed that she is “clearly out of place here [Townsville], and Elsie herself would have us believe that this is because she is an independent New Woman, an intellectual, unappreciated at work and in her personal life”. Discuss this observation in relation to the characterisation of Elsie in the novel: is the reader to identify and sympathise with her in this respect, or does the narrator encourage a more sceptical view of Elsie and her attitude to local place? Your response should conform to the usual requirements of the academic essay. Question 4. In 1936 Patrick White met the painter Roy de Maistre, who became an important influence in his life and work.
