Managers are part of a dynamic team and their hiring decisions affect the quality of interactions between new hires and existing employees, as well as interactions with the company’s customers. Ultimately, such interactions directly influence sales and profitability. The manager’s responsibility is to make hiring decisions that ensure these interactions have a positive influence. Instructions: Conduct research to understand the employment process, from the sourcing of candidates through completion of the hiring process. Identify the important attributes that managers look for when interviewing applicants for a vacant position. Use the results of your research and this week’s content to address the following questions: Describe at least two ways that candidates for open positions in a retail business are sourced (identified). Compare and contrast two processes for applying for a position in a retail business (e.g. – internal vs. external applications; hard-copy vs. electronic applications; etc.), and identify who is typically responsible for reviewing applications/resumes. Cite two examples of “red flags” in an application that may indicate that a candidate is not suitable for an open position and explain why. Evaluate how job postings for an open position may influenced by the organization’s staffing plan. Formulate one interview question that would add value for both the manager and the applicant in a hiring situation. Justify your reasoning. Make and defend at least one recommendation to improve the recruitment and selection process for businesses.
