Clements – Spring 2020 – ENG 200 Project 1:The Invisible Art (6-8 pages) (250 points) Due Dates: Working Draft: 2/3 Rough Draft: 2/5 Final Draft: 2/19 From the Syllabus: This initial project is intended to get us started on writing investigative papers in our class and to sharpen our skills on rhetorical analysis. After having read the first few chapters of Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, you are aware of how rhetorical techniques can take on new forms in media. You are tasked with taking concepts from the first few (or more) chapters of Understanding Comics and applying them to a medium of your choice. To do this, you will need to select a specific text from a different medium, then investigate how concepts like icons, the gutter (line, text-and-image, and color) are utilized to accomplish specific rhetorical goals. Your paper will need to establish a clear understanding of the rhetorical situation and incorporate concepts from Scott McCloud. Description: The focus of this essay is rhetorical analysis. You have, at this point, been exposed to the rhetorical situation as well as the concept of icon. Choose a SHORT text and write an essay analyzing the rhetorical situation of that text. This text MUST have visual component, and for the purposes of this project, I recommend that it be relatively short and/or static. In the process of writing your essay, you should identify the text, author, audience, purposes, and setting, and in doing so, take time to explain each of these components and how they interact with each other. In particular, you should pay close attention to how ideas in the text are communicated to the audience. Additionally, evaluate how icons present in the text play a role in this communication. This project will take the form of a formal, analytical essay. Basic essay construction is required (Intro, body, conclusion) as well as proper citation of the sources you utilize.
