Imagine that you are an elite figure from any of the ancient civilizations (Egypt, Mesopotamia) we have discussed. You have the means to commission a work of art. What will it be?
Write a page identifying your imagined self and context, and what your commission will be.
Tell me what society you belong to (Egypt, Mesopotamia) what gender you are, what your position is in society. Will the work you commission be a painting, a sculpture or architecture? What style will it be? Will it be public or private? Will it be sacred or secular?

Angles to consider:
Design, politics, religion, gender, sexuality, status, etc…what we always focus on. Think of it as your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about ancient culture, I must stress, this should be no more than one page of original writing. This is clearly open book, so there is no reason it should not be terrific.

In what ways does the Spanish model recognize interracial marriages whilst retaining a racist hierarchy in which the Spanish were on top and the people of African descent were on the bottom?

In what ways does the Spanish model recognize interracial marriages whilst retaining a racist hierarchy in which the Spanish were on top and the people of African descent were on the bottom? What status do indigenous people have in the model? In what ways did Jose Marti’s essay on race reject this racism and create the basis for a non-racial independent Cuba? In what ways do both these systems differ from the American one-drop rule?

Explain what [policy] changes need to be made to make sure that persons like the main character in your story do not engage in crime.

Based on your knowledge of the theories and our discussion in class, this paper will require you to select one of the films from the list below and utilize three theories we have covered this semester to explain the criminal behavior depicted in the film.
*NOTE: When choosing a theory, focus on one theorist and go into detail about their interpretation of the theory, instead of explaining all the variations of the theory. For example, Anomie/Strain theories include Merton, Agnew, and Messner & Rosenfeld—choose only one theory from that group.

You should choose three theories you believe explain the character(s) and provide in-depth details from the film that support your argument highlighting the major assumptions of each theory you choose. Most importantly, make sure your facts are specific enough and relate to the theory’s assumptions. You are to answer the following questions:
How do the theories you have chosen explain the main character’s behavior (e.g. how can each of the three theories be applied to explain the behavior)?
Explain what [policy] changes need to be made to make sure that persons like the main character in your story do not engage in crime.

Watch the full documentary The Weather Underground that I will show in class after Exam 2 and determine the filmmaker’s purpose. Identify four questions and themes that the producer attempts to answer.

Watch the full documentary The Weather Underground that I will show in class after Exam 2 and determine the filmmaker’s purpose. Identify four questions and themes that the producer attempts to answer.

Research the claims made in the documentary. Consult at least five academic sources. Wikipedia and encyclopedias don’t count.

In your review, creatively introduce the documentary in a half page. In other words, what is the filmmaker seeking to demonstrate? Then raise the questions the producer is seeking to answer and tell me the four themes from the film you are going to investigate.

In the body of the paper, describe and analyze the four areas you investigated (one page pure theme). As you summarize tell me if you find the evidence compelling or not. From your research, are the facts reliable and the conclusions sound? If you find “missing information,” would it strengthen or weaken the case put forth in the documentary? You cannot cover everything, so choose wisely the information you think is worth your attention or criticism. Unlike the introduction, do not just give me a statement of opinion, but rather explain your reasoning process.

For your conclusion (a half page to a page and a half), summarize and state the significance of your major points. What is the key to understanding the documentary? What historical impacts can be identified? What lessons can be drawn from your review?

Make sure to properly document your sources. To reiterate, you need to consult and cite within your film review at least five academic sources, not encyclopedic articles. In other words, Wikipedia doesn’t count. All short articles or copies of the pages from books or longer articles that you cited within your essay must be turned in with your paper. Failure to follow this instruction will result in a failing grade.
