Performance Assessment Strategies. 1st Post Due by Day 3. Appropriate assessment strategies have the potential to support children’s individual learning needs, and they can help teachers see evidence of the effect of their teaching, while also providing a measure of program accountability. Additionally, it is also important to realize that assessment practices have the potential to do harm. Just as there are concerns about inappropriate curriculum content and teaching strategies, there are concerns about assessment. NAEYC has created guidelines that specifically address the early childhood professional’s ethical responsibilities to children around assessment. Here are the principles and ideals that focus on assessment in NAEYC’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment (Links to an external site.).

To begin this assignment,

  • Read the weekly assigned reading and carefully review methods of data collection including anecdotal records, running records, event sampling, time sampling, checklists, and rating scales. Next, select your three most preferred methods of authentic assessment.
  • Review the following document which highlights the ideals and principles specifically referring to the responsible assessment of young children found within the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment.

Next, in your initial post,

  • Discuss why you, as a program administrator, would promote these approaches to assessment in an early childhood program you were administering.
  • Provide at least one example of the negative consequences for children when programs use inappropriate child assessment tools or strategies (such as using an assessment tool incorrectly or interpreting assessment data).
  • Use the course text and/or one outside source to support your response.

Identify two of the SDGs that you consider important (as they relate to either your local community or to your core values).

1.The essay question requires that you integrate information taken from several different (referenced) sources, to organize that information, and to summarize the information with conclusions that may be new to you.

2.Begin with a thesis statement, (or a claim) that you will explain and justify in your essay. Support your ideas with a rationale and evidence (not opinion statements such as “I think”)that are logically organized throughout the essay. Your ideas and the support should be clear to the reader.

3.Select relevant material to illustrate your points and provide specific references to class readings as well as additional research that you conduct via FDU library resources. Your essay must make substantive reference to at least three resources. Do not cite, quote, or reference from Wikipedia or general non-verifiable sources. References should follow a standard citation format (APA, MLA, Chicago) per your instructor.

4.Your essay should reflect appropriate grammar and syntax.

Common Essay: UNIV 2002

The economist Jeffrey Sachs argues that specific and achievable goals help to develop more effective policy reforms. As an example, he quotes President John F. Kennedy who gave the commencement address at American University in 1963.

In that speech, Kennedy said: “By defining our goal more clearly, by making it seem more manageable and less remote, we can help all people to see it, to draw hope from it and to move irresistibly towards it.” Kennedy meant the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty needed to have specific and achievable goals to be effective, and Sachs means that the clarity of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can help achieve policy reform. How would you use the same idea of specific and achievable goals to think about changes in policy or society in relation to sustainability?

Specifically, 1. Justify the relevance of Kennedy’s statement with respect to the UN SDGs with specific references to the role of governments and private corporations. 2. Identify two of the SDGs that you consider important (as they relate to either your local community or to your core values). With the two selected SDGs, evaluate the interdependence of those goals while considering how the funding needs and action plans for the goals are interconnected.

Describe some ways that an organization can recover it’s IT resources from a disaster. What controls should have been in place in order to be able to retrieve this data?

1) Keystroke logging, often referred to as keylogging or keyboard capturing, is the action of recording (logging) the keys struck on a keyboard, typically covertly, so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that their actions are being monitored. Explain a situation where using a keyloggers may be used in either a legitimate (legal) way or used as a tool for criminals(Needs 200 words).

2) Locate an article on a system breach (Target stores, Sony Pictures, US Government, and many more). In 2-3 paragraphs, briefly explain the situation and what kind of information was compromised. How large was the breach and how long did it take to find the problem. Include a link to any of your Internet resources.

3) Describe some ways that an organization can recover it’s IT resources from a disaster. What controls should have been in place in order to be able to retrieve this data?

What cross-cultural experience would you like to share? Describe the context, the backstory.

Cross-Cultural Case Study—25%. For this assignment, you will interview someone who identifies as culturally different from you and that you don’t live with about their cross-cultural experiences. You will then write a 5-page double-spaced report on your findings. The process is as follows: I have already completed the case study interview.

  1. Describe yourself culturally.
  2. What cross-cultural experience would you like to share? Describe the context, the backstory, etc.
  3. What cross-cultural experiences did you have prior to the one you are sharing today?
  4. How did you end up in this situation?
  5. Explain how you felt prepared for the experience.
  6. Explain how you felt ill-prepared for the experience.
  7. How do you feel that others in the situation reacted to you?
  8. What did you learn, if anything, from the experience?
  9. Is there anything else you would like to share?

Qualitative and quantitative data is often used together to get a holistic picture of the study subject. Since both require different vantage points the way they are studied needs different approaches, different processes and different data gathering protocols. The question is asked, “what types of information do we need to understand the subject matter and solve the problem?’

Discussion B (Select B or C)

Chapter one in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers provides a simple statistical analysis of birthdates of hockey players. Adding a similar assessment of soccer players, he then draws conclusions about the system that shaped these sportsmen. Post an evaluation of Gladwell’s use of quantitative data by explaining whether he collected and interpreted his data in a reliable manner. Provide support for your position.

Determine the actions of the incident response team that are the most critical in the event of a major incident or disaster.

Imagine that you are part of an organization that has recently formed an incident response team (IRT). You need to draft an initial address to the team members. Respond with your initial address to the team members overviewing the elements of the incident response team charter and the potential challenges that an IRT could encounter.

Determine the actions of the incident response team that are the most critical in the event of a major incident or disaster.

Using basic statistical terms and definitions, explain why a comparison of variance over a 10-year period has more validity than a comparison of a year-to-year basis.

Using numbers and statistics can be a powerful persuader. Individuals possess a wide range of proficiency, however, regarding the use of statistics. Since individuals may use numbers to clarify information as well as to influence others, you need a basic understanding of statistics to evaluate the information. The key to statistics is the ability to interpret raw data so that the meaning is sensible and defensible.

This week’s Assignment challenges you to interpret and evaluate an assortment of statistical presentations. To complete this Assignment, obtain the Week 4 Assignment Handout: Statistical Evaluations located in this weeks Learning Resources.

This handout will guide you to a variety of resources that present quantitative data. (You download each of these resources from the Document section in the Learning Resources.) You will apply what you have explored in this week regarding statistics to answer questions about the data. These questions target your ability to read and interpret the data and to consider whether the data presenter’s conclusions are statistically justified and what types of meaning can be gleaned from the conclusions.

The grade for this assignment (90 points) is based on your answers to the questions for the data/report sections you select. The Week 4 Assignment Handout: Statistical Evaluations has four sections; select two of the four sections to address for this Assignment.

SECTION 1: To complete the questions in this section, download the Death in the United States, 2010 document in the Week 4 resources.

Using basic statistical terms and definitions, explain why a comparison of variance over a 10-year period has more validity than a comparison of a year-to-year basis.

Read the “Data source and methods” section on page 6 of the Death in the United States, 2010 document. Explain how collecting data in the method described may skew the data one way or another—that is, make it less accurate than the real life it purports to reflect.
From the percentage of deaths within an age group indicated in the pie charts on page 4 in the Death in the United States, 2010 document, are you more likely to die from cancer or heart disease if you are in the 45–64 age group or in the 65 or older age group? Explain your answer. Interpret why this is so.

Is there evidence to support the claim that while the infant mortality rate [IMR] had its single largest drop between 2009 and 2010, the rate of decrease in the IMR is slowing down in the two decades indicated in Figure 5? (See page 5 the Death in the United States, 2010 document.) Explain your answer.

Can you support the statement that the older you get the less likely you are to die suddenly or cause your own death? What data would you use to support this?

SECTION 2: To complete the questions in this section, download the Employment Projections and the Education, Job Openings, and Unemployment in Metropolitan America documents in the Week 4 resources. Examine the employment statistical data that show the more education you have the less unemployment occurs:

Which of the following scenarios makes the greatest difference in your yearly income and reducing your likelihood of being unemployed: 1) Going from an associate’s degree to a bachelor’s degree or 2) Going from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree? Explain your answer.

In what ways do these two studies support the adage “A rising tide lifts all boats” when it comes to education and unemployment?

Just as the axiom that states, “old is 15 years older than you are,” being rich is a relative term. If you were a 20-year-old without a high school diploma, what academic path might you take to triple your weekly income? Where would be a good place to live once you complete your education?  Explain your answers.

Using Table 1 on page 8 of Education, Job Openings, and Unemployment in Metropolitan America and the Employment Projections chart, predict a salary of a person who is a “Supervisor of Sales Workers.” Based on the level of education for the group, is it more or less likely for a supervisor of sales workers to be unemployed compared with a “Health Diagnosing and Treating Practitioner”?

SECTION 3: The Economics of Sports

To answer the questions in this section, visit the Walden Library to read the following article:

  • Baade,      R. A., Baumann, R. W., & Matheson, V. A. (2011). Big men on campus:      Estimating the economic impact of college sports on local economies. Regional      Studies, 45(3), 371–380.
Retrieved from the Walden Library databases.

In the article introduction, the authors give figures on the University of Minnesota’s new stadium that was built for the football team. “Although the precise line between what constitutes state and university funds is admittedly unclear when dealing with a public university, at least 55% of the new stadium was paid for with designated state funds (Baade, Baumann, & Matheson, 2011, p. 372). What is meant by the underlined phrase? Why can this not be determined precisely?
Explain why the authors used a non-sports–related event such as Hurricane Andrew to include in the comparisons of tables 3, 4, 5, and 6. Is this necessary? Is this an appropriate use of the data when focusing on the economic impact of sports in an area?
After analyzing tax revenues throughout the state in comparison with the local area during football and basketball games, the authors state the following in the conclusion:

The present regression analysis of taxable sales in Florida between 1980 to early 2007 fails to support these claims. Men’s basketball games at Florida State University and University of Florida were found to have no statistically significant impact on taxable sales in Tallahassee and Gainesville, respectively, and indeed, the coefficient on the variable was even negative in two of the four models (Baade et al., 2011, p. 372).

What is meant by “statistically significant impact?” Is there money to be made on sports teams in these college towns? Who makes the money?
You sit on a task force created to deal with an unemployment problem in these cities. Should the local community encourage the universities in these two towns to have more major sporting events as a strategy for growing the city economy? Why or why not?
