Identify how the text uses the concept of icons and how those icons fits into the rhetorical situation.

This initial project is intended to get us started on writing investigative papers in our class and to sharpen our skills on rhetorical analysis. After having read the first few chapters of Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, you are aware of how rhetorical techniques can take on new forms in media. You are tasked with taking concepts from the first few (or more) chapters of Understanding Comics and applying them to a medium of your choice. To do this, you will need to select a specific text from a different medium, then investigate how concepts like icons, the gutter (line, text-and-image, and color) are utilized to accomplish specific rhetorical goals. Your paper will need to establish a clear understanding of the rhetorical situation and incorporate concepts from Scott McCloud. Description: The focus of this essay is rhetorical analysis. You have, at this point, been exposed to the rhetorical situation as well as the concept of icon. Choose a SHORT text and write an essay analyzing the rhetorical situation of that text. This text MUST have visual component, and for the purposes of this project, I recommend that it be relatively short and/or static. In the process of writing your essay, you should identify the text, author, audience, purposes, and setting, and in doing so, take time to explain each of these components and how they interact with each other. In particular, you should pay close attention to how ideas in the text are communicated to the audience. Additionally, evaluate how icons present in the text play a role in this communication. This project will take the form of a formal, analytical essay. Basic essay construction is required (Intro, body, conclusion) as well as proper citation of the sources you utilize. Point breakdown: Rough Draft – 50, Final Draft – 100, Peer Review – 50 Directions: 1. Select a text. You might select from traditional media, such as written fiction, television commercials, or music. Alternatively, you are free to investigate newer media, such as memes, Snapchat, remixes, etc. ● Your text MUST have visual elements ● I recommend a compact text in order to best suit this assignment. You may find that lengthy videos, entire movies or books, or anything longer than a few pages or minutes may be too complex for a 6-8 page paper. 2. Identify the rhetorical situation surrounding the text (text, author, audience, purposes, setting). Make sure you can justify your explanation of the components through evidence or sources. (i.e How do you know that the audience of this music video is ___?) 3. Identify how the text uses the concept of icons and how those icons fits into the rhetorical situation. 4. In the form of a formal, analytical essay, establish the following: Requirements: ● Explain the rhetorical situation surrounding your text and how ideas are communicated to the audience. ● Note the presence and function of icon in the text. ● Evaluate also what there is to be gained through this analysis. Why might it be important to investigate how this text functions, and to whom? ● Draft: 3-4 pages, Final: 6-8 pages ● Identification and evaluation of the rhetorical situation in your chosen text and an explanation of the use of icon in that text ● Citation of all sources consulted and mentioned in your analysis on a Works Cited Page, including McCloud. ● Adherence to essay conventions (Intro, body, conclusion, thesis statement, topic sentences)
