Write a paper based on the article “Photos Reveal Media’s Softer Tone on Opioid Crisis” by Michael Shaw. You will read the article, choose two photos, and make an argument about what messages the photos are sending about addiction. The goal of this assignment is to put some of your media analysis tools into action. Many people have argued that there is a racial and class-based discrepancy today between how politicians, police, and the public treat crack (war on drugs) and how they treat opioids (epidemic). This difference is historical as well as current. Shaw analyzes how photojournalists’ portrayals of crack addicts, past and present, differ from news photos of opioid addicts today. The article links to several photo essays. From these links, choose a photograph about crack addiction and compare and contrast it with a current photo about opioid addiction. In this comparison, you are looking to prove or contradict a particular thing Shaw notices about the differences in coverage. PhotographsThese are two categories of photos as discussed in the article. I’m including the links here for clarity. Compare a photograph from one of these sources mentioned in the article…Eugene Richards, Cocaine True Cocaine BlueMiami Herald, “Photo Gallery: Michel du Cille’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photography” Spencer Platt, “US Drug Deaths Continue Rapid Rise”…to a photograph from one of these sources mentioned in the article.Time, “A Caring Lens on the Opioid Crisis”The New Yorker, “The Addicts Next Door”The photos you choose must have at least one person in them.
