Chapter 12 (Religion and Spirituality) 15.What is the Southern Baptist controversy and how does it illustrate the plight of women in religion? That marginalized women would stay in this institution demonstrates what? 16.Explain in your own words what it means to say that religion is an institution that may simultaneously oppress and empower? 17.Give examples of religious laws that constrain women. How do these laws work through families and marriage? 18.Who are Santeras? How are they granted power in their communities? PART TWO Answer any one question in 15-20 sentences. This answer is worth 50 points. You can cite from any reading in the textbook. Make sure you give the page numbers. Again, using textbook readings will give you better points. What do you learn about the ways gender norms shape sexual scripts? 2.What is reproductive justice? Do you believe this is important? How do women suffer when society denies them reproductive justice? 3.What messages about gender and other systems of inequality and privilege did you get from your family when you were growing up? Are women ordained or accepted as religious authorities? Are there examples of religious fundamentalism in your religion?
