Discuss ways in which government must be reorganized in order for us to be free.

In this third and final unit of the course, we are interested in the ways in which government must be reorganized in order for us to be free. In the case of each of our three thinkers in this unit of the course, the citizens (i.e., the people) have an important part to play in the creation and/or the actualization/enactment of the proper kind of government that will ultimately bring about freedom. Why? For each Rousseau, Tocqueville, and Goldman, what is the role of the people in creating the proper government? In order to answer this, you must explain 1) what the proper government is, while being sure to pay special attention to the unique details that each thinker highlights, 2) how this proper government comes about, 3) who the people are, 4) why the people matter to each thinker, and 5) what unique role(s) the people play in the process of creating the proper kind of government. How do these citizen actions and the resulting form of government relate to human nature? What is the link between citizen actions, proper government, and human nature on the one hand and freedom on the other? As you explain all of this, be sure to thoroughly explain what freedom is for each thinker as well. In fact, be sure to clearly define all of the key concepts that you use. Be sure to address how each Rousseau, Tocqueville, and Goldman (given our course readings) would answer this question. As per the paper guidelines, be sure that you build an essay and that you compare and contrast the three thinkers; do not merely produce three disconnected summaries of the ideas.
