What religious themes did spirituals contained and what purpose did they serve?

The goal of the “Slavery and Religion” assignment is to help students understand how religion was used to both control and give hope to enslaved people. Slave owners in the American south used religion to control their slaves. On the other hand, slaves used religion as a vehicle to express their longing for freedom. The assignment will have you examine a catechism from 1854 specifically for slaves and spirituals. Spirituals were songs slaves sang that express their desires, hopes, and/or the injustices they were subjected too. Some spirituals contained religious themes or coded messages to aid runaways. It is impossible to trace the creation of spirituals to a particular group of slaves or a specific southern slave region. Select two spirituals (Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel, Steal Away to Jesus, and All of God’s Chillun got Wings). Based on those two spirituals and the Catechism for Slaves explain the role religion played in both controlling slaves and in helping them express their longing for freedom. In addition, answer all of the questions below in essay form: 1. How was the catechism used to control enslaved people? 2. What hopes and aspirations did slaves express through spirituals? 3. What religious themes did spirituals contained and what purpose did they serve? 4. What was the catechism’s message about work? 5. How does the catechism use stories and images from the Bible to reinforce the master/slave relationship? Provide a bibliography page. If you need an outside source, use a source through website and not fro a book
