Write a paper correlating video games and child/adolescent obesity.
Choose one of the four stories above and write an essay focusing on the one word or phrase which you think is the most important word in the story. Offer three points that support your choice; these may be reasons why the word is important, places in the story where the word is important, or ways that the word is used to emphasize the theme in the story.Do not use outside sources for this paper. Use only your own ideas, experiences, and words.Your essay should be 500-700 words written in the standard 5-paragraph essay format you learned in ENG 111, including a thesis statement at the end of the introductory paragraph, focused body paragraphs with clear topic sentences, and a conclusion. Any essay less than 500 words will not be graded and will receive a zero.In your introduction, you should establish the name of the story and the author and give a very brief (1-2 sentence) summary of the key points of the story, then state your thesis. Don’t spend any more time “telling the story.” In your body paragraphs, spend time explaining the importance of the word you have chosen in the story.Giving specific examples and support from the story is always better than being general or vague. Stay focused on the story; don’t use personal experiences as supporting points. It’s okay to use “I” in your essay, but don’t use “you.”Use standard format:· Put your name, course and section number, and assignment title clearly at the top of the document.· Use 12 font.· Double space.
The written documents that come from ancient Crete are few and provide little information regarding religion, politics or lifestyle of the Minoan people. Our best window into this world is through the excavated art and architecture. For this activity, you will select evidence from the palace complex (and complex it is!) to search for clues about culture.Begin by searching the text or online sources to locate three examples of architectural detail, wall painting, pottery or sculpture from Knossos. An exceptional site for a virtual tour has been created by the British School at Athens (Links to an external site.). This site provides fascinating 360 degree views of rooms. (Be aware that the initial excavator, Sir Arthur Evans, made some controversial restorations to the palace. Know that what you are seeing may not be all original.) A great website for art from Knossos is that of the Heraklion Museum in Crete (Links to an external site.). Painted pottery, sculpture and frescoes will be found here. Another option for learning about Knossos is this video available through the Excelsior Library:Mycenaean Knossos (Links to an external site.) [Video file] [03 mins 19 sec]City of Knossos (Links to an external site.) [Video file] [04 mins 02 sec]In the essay, use your three examples as evidence for some aspect(s) of Minoan culture. You may find your material evidence indicates commerce, seafaring, or perhaps a love of nature. Maybe your sampling speaks of religion, ceremony, or costume. Be sure to identify fully your examples, and include plenty of specific description as you make a case for them as cultural evidence. Illustrations are helpful.Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer.

A rising nation, spread over a wide and fruitful land, traversing all the seas with the rich productions of their industry, engaged in commerce with nations who feel power and forget right, advancing rapidly to destinies beyond the reach of mortal eye; when I contemplate these transcendent objects, and see the honor, the happiness, and the hopes of this beloved country committed to the issue and auspices of this day, I shrink from the contemplation and humble myself before the magnitude of the undertaking. Utterly indeed should I despair, did not the presence of many, whom I here see, remind me, that, in the other high authorities provided by our Constitution, I shall find resources of wisdom, of virtue, and of zeal, on which to rely under all difficulties. To you, then, gentlemen, who are charged with the sovereign functions of legislation, and to those associated with you, I look with encouragement for that guidance and support which may enable us to steer with safety the vessel in which we are all embarked, amidst the conflicting elements of a troubled world.First Inaugural Address, Thomas Jefferson, 1801Historical Context:Intended Audience:Point of view:Purpose: The evil of overcrowding is magnified to a prodigious extent in New York, which, being the part of arrival–the Gate of the New World– receives a certain addition to its population from almost every ship-load of emigrants that passes through Castle Garden. There is scarcely any city in the world possessing greater resources than New York, but these resources have long since been strained to the very uttermost to meet the yearly increasing demands created by this continuous accession to its inhabitants… The Irish in America, 1867Historical Context:Intended Audience:Point of view:Purpose: I went up to the Capitol and heard Mr. King in the Senate, upon what is called the Missouri question… There was nothing new in his argument, but he unravelled with ingenious and subtle analysis many of the sophistical tissues of the slave-holders. He laid down the position of the natural liberty of man, and its incompatibility with slavery in any shape. He also questioned the Constitutional right of the President and Senate to make the Louisiana Treaty… he spoke, however, with great great power, and the great slaveholders in the House gnawed their lips and clenched their fists as they heard him… The slave-holders cannot hear of them without being seized with cramps. They call them seditious and inflammatory, when their greatest real defect is their timidity. Never since human sentiments and human conduct were influenced by human speech was there a theme for eloquence like the free side of this question now before Congress of this Union. By what fatality does it happen that all the most eloquent orators of the body are on its slavish side? There is a great mass of cool judgment and plain sense on the side of freedom and humanity, but the ardent spirits and passions are on the side of oppression. Oh, ifbut one man could arise with a genius capable of comprehending, a heart capable of supporting, and an utterance capable of communicating those eternal truths that belong to this question, to lay bare in all its nakedness that outrage upon the gooness of God, human slavery, now is the time, and this is the occasion, uponw hcich such a man would perform the duties of an angel upon earth!Reflections on the Missouri Question, John Quincy Adams, 1820Historical Context:Intended Audience:Point of view:Purpose: My beloved brethren: All the inhabitants of the earth, (except the sons of Africa) are called men, and of course are and ought to be free. But we, (coloured people) and our children are brutes!! And of course are, and ought to be slaves to the American people and their children forever! To dig their mines and work their farms; and thus go on enriching them, from one generation to another with our blood and our tears!I promised in a preceding page to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the most increduous, that we, (coloured people of the United States of America) are the most wretched, degraded and abject seet of beings that ever lived sin
