A nurse anesthetist is an advanced practice nurse practitioner that administers anesthesia, usually under the guidance of an anesthesiologist or other MD or DO, during surgery and other medical procedures. Their job is to safely and effectively administer anesthesia to patients as well as monitor them for adverse reactions, and prepare them for surgery, which may include intubation, ventilator management, and the insertion of arterial lines or central venous catheters. The median salary for a nurse anesthetist, or CRNA, is $147,603, with entry-level positions expecting to make around $130,000 per year, and experienced practitioners making upwards of $170,000 per year. For CRNA’s, Montana pays the most on average, South Dakota has the highest concentration of CRNAs, and Texas has the most job availability and employees the most CRNAs. To become a CRNA a registered nurse with their bachelor’s degree must be accepted and graduate from an accredited university, such as the Louisiana State University School (LSU) of Nurse Anesthetists, which will be focused on for this post. LSU’s CRNA program is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, has been approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, and also accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. Their faculty is led by Laura Bonanno DNP, CRNA. To be accepted a nurse must have an unencumbered active nursing license in Louisiana, have a GPA of 3.0 with a 300 on the GRE in the last 5 years, as well as a bachelors degree, three letters of recommendation, one year of critical care experience, and active BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications. Once accepted curriculum involves the research projects over the course of the last semesters focusing on Proposal Development, Implementation, and finally Evaluation and Dissemination. Additionally, there are clinical components during the last two years of the three-year school with a total of 78 coarse hours worth of clinical rotations and 138 total coarse hours for the program. The program has no online option but does have full or part-time options and the total cost of tuition and fees will be $26,407.50 for in-state residents and $42762.23 for out of state residents.
