Is the War in Drugs working?

You may choose from poverty (as a cause of crime), plea bargaining, cash bail, unnecessarily long sentences (in the case of elderly people in jail), the War on Drugs, Predictive Policing, Racial Profiling, Police/community mistrust, jails and prisons, police brutality or any other issue that you want to research that perhaps we did not cover in class (please run it by me first though). What do we know about this issue? (How does is help/hurt our CJ system and those involved in it?). Is this something that needs to be changed for our system to be better? Why? How can we change it? Please provide examples or alternate ideas. In many cases, your issues may relate to each other (for example, poverty, cash bail, and plea bargaining). If this is the case, explain how they relate to each other and discuss all of them, but only two need to be discussed in depth. In other words, we know that police brutality is a problem in many places. What does the research tell you can help with that? Is the War in Drugs working? If not, why? How could we better deal with our countries drug problem? What about cash bail? Are there any viable alternatives to cash bail? You should use the research to backup your suggestions. Depending on which issue(s) you examine, you may choose one or two to discuss. I would expect at least some course material, two newspaper articles and 6 scholarly sources for this assignment. PLEASE do not cite Wikipedia, at all, ever! Cites like Reddit, Quora or Ask.com are also off-limits, as are websites that belong to businesses or individuals who are not academics. News sources such as CNN, ABC, USA Today, VOX, etc. are NOT scholarly. These may be used, but ONLY in addition to the minimum number of scholarly sources (they do not count toward the minimum number of scholarly sources).
