The purpose of this activity is to discuss the cognitive development stages of critical thinking. You will review the stages and determine your own place within it.

In Chapter 1 of your textbook, as presented in Highlights, carefully review the three stages of cognitive development in college students. Examine the levels that Sheese and Radovanovic say represent our cognitive development. Take notes on how these stages might be applied to developing your own critical thinking strategies. This assignment will be an integral component of your 4-part project for this course. This activity aligns with module outcome 1. These questions are adapted from Stop & Assess Activities.

Answer one of the following discussion questions:

1. College professor Stephen Satris maintains that the relativism of the second stage of development is not a genuine philosophical position, but a means of avoiding one’s ideas challenged. Student relativism, he writes, is primarily a method of protection, a suit of armor, which can be applied to one’s own opinions, whatever they may bebut not necessarily to the opinion of others. It is an expression of the idea that no one step forward and judge (and possibly criticize) one’s own opinion. What is your suit of armor? Discuss strategies you might take to break out of this suit of armor. Consider your own stage of cognitive development, and share in your response, as you feel comfortable.

2. Most college students do not make the transition to the third, or commitment, stage of cognitive development. Why do you think this is so? Discuss ways in which the college curriculum in general might be restructured to encourage cognitive growth in students.

3. The first three questions of the Self-Evaluation in the Think Tank feature represent the three stages of cognitive development. Which stage, or transition between stages, best describes your approach to understanding the world? What are the shortcomings and strengths of your current stage of cognitive development? Develop a plan to improve your skills as a critical thinker. Put the plan into action. Report on the results of your action plan.

4. Adopt the stance of the Buddhist beginner’s mind. Be attentive only to what is happening in the now. After one minute, write down everything you observed going on around you as well as inside of you (your feelings, body language, and the like). Did you notice more than you might have otherwise? Share your observations with the class. Can you think of any ways that this activity could lead to higher levels of cognition? Could this activity be a practical pathway to higher level thinking? Discuss ways in which this practice of being more attentive to your present moment experiences might enhance your effectiveness as a critical thinker.

Critically assess this claim. In your answer identify and explain the range of causal factors that impact on the health of Indigenous people and demonstrate how these factors interrelate to contribute to poor health outcomes.

Answer ONE of the following essay questions:
1) Aboriginal activist Gary Foley has declared that any engagement with the government or the dominant economy is anti-Aboriginal and assimilatory. Countering these Aboriginal leaders such as Warren Mundine and Marcia Langton have argued that the mythical noble savage ideal of Indigenous Australia is detrimental to contemporary Aboriginal people. On the one hand it is argued that Aboriginality is fixed in the past and on the other that Aboriginality changes. Through your understanding of notions of cultural change and continuity and essentialism critically evaluate both arguments and illustrate your answer with appropriate examples.
2) It is argued and to a certain extent borne out by statistical data, that policies introduced in the early 1970s based on self-determination have not delivered better outcomes for Aboriginal people. Critically discuss this claim by evaluating the benefits and costs associated with self-determination explaining what self-determination is and evaluating the range of views being expressed about self-determination. 3) Noel Pearson asserts that the legacy of colonisation argument is not an adequate explanation for the current health status of many Indigenous people. Critically assess this claim. In your answer identify and explain the range of causal factors that impact on the health of Indigenous people and demonstrate how these factors interrelate to contribute to poor health outcomes. In your answer consider initiatives that are attempting to improve the health profile.
4) One of the recommendations of the 1997 Bringing them Home report was to implement an Indigenous Child Placement Principle (ICPP) to guide the placement of children requiring out-of-home care. Critically discuss the rationale behind the Principle, explain why it is considered important, and evaluate its outcomes. In your answer, you may also like to consider arguments about transracial placements in comparable countries such as North America.
5) A sound education is regarded as essential for Indigenous students in order to redress disadvantage. However, it is claimed that contemporary education presents a double bind for Indigenous students and is detrimental to their culture. Critically discuss this dilemma. In your answer outline initiatives, such as Aboriginal Learning Styles theory (Harris 1982) and culturally appropriate curriculum, that have attempted to address this dilemma and assess their capacity to do so.

Compare and contrast the differentiated practice competencies between an associate and baccalaureate education in nursing.

Describe one strategy for development of the letter. This should be one that you identify with or think is effective. Base your description on this Module’s readings and the course activities you participated in.
Remember that your paraphrase should end up being about the same number of words as the original material that you cite. Please note that you are not paraphrasing the entire document but more like a sentence or two. This is similar to what you might do with a quote, but with your own words. A paraphrase is not the same as a summary.
Explain why you think the strategy is effectively used in the letter.
Incorporate at least one quote from the speech, and properly cite the quote on the References page.
Explain how you plan to use the development strategy in your Portfolio Project.
