Pan African Studies: THIRD WORLD IMAGES IN FILM.

QUESTION: Scholars of Eurocentric origin often argue that there is nothing of political, cultural, and economic significance to talk about in the Third World. They portray the Third World as the place of backwardness that never contributed anything of importance to world culture and civilization. This is especially the case with reference to Africa. Now, using this observation as your point of departure, discuss how Walter Rodney challenges these misrepresentations of the Third World with particular reference to Africa. As you compile your response, you are encouraged to make use of the documentary by Basil Davidson to complement Walter Rodney’s argument in the reading. Also, feel free to use other sources in the form of books, videos, documentaries, and articles.

SOURCES: Go through the reading by Walter Rodney (“How Africa Developed Before the coming of the Europeans up to the 15th century” in How Europe Underdeveloped Africa: Pages 51 to 114) AND watch the documentary by Basil Davidson (https://youtu.be/X75COneJ4w8)

In your paper, you will discuss the following:

1. The structure of the coenzyme or vitamin. How does this structure enable a biochemical pathway?

2. Chemical and physical properties of the chemical including the molecular and structural formula and the family of molecules of which this coenzyme is derived from or vitamin transition into.

3. The reason why this substance is of interest to the scientific community and why it is being researched.

4. Research results that have shown the importance of these chemicals in human diets, and what diseases may be associated with the deficit of these chemicals. Both positive and negative results of chemical usage should be investigated.

5. Discuss the methodology of the research (tissue cultures, bioassays, animal studies, etc.)

All information must be cited and you are to submit a reference page with your report. Remember that what is not original to you, MUST be cited. If there are no citations, it will cost you 5 points off your grade. The format and rubrics are as follows:

title page — 5 points

Description of biochemical pathway involved in producing the molecule– 20 points

What is the molecular formula of the coenyme/vitamin– 20 points
The signs and symptoms of the disease associated with vitamin or coenzyme deficiency — 20 points
what has been learned about the importance of the coenzyme/vitamin by scientists as a specific research of interest –20 points
putting information into your own words and citing information accurately –10 points
reference page — 5 points
The 100 will be equivalent to the 10 points. Any points off will be translated in a fraction of the 10 points. Example -20 points will give a grade of 8. A perfect paper will be 10.
