1- The agricultural crisis that occurred during the Great Depression effected men of color. Most Black men were tenant farmers and were evicted or forced off the farms they worked on. With the passage of the New Deal black farm ownership rose 17% to 23% (Axinn & Stern, 2017). Native Americans also saw positive outcomes from the New Deal. Native Americans were able to regain land that was taken from them, they were able to get better healthcare and educational systems, as well as access to credit for developments Axinn & Stern, 2017). Women were able to gain provisions for mothers and their children’s welfare under the Social Security Act through ADC. The Social Security Act led to the creation of a two-class system by returning to the ideology of worthy and unworthy poor which lead to the creation of categorizing the needy. Currently relief is still based on a class system. There is relief for individuals who are entitled to the program’s benefits such as Social Security and unemployment, and then there is relief based on need which are considered public assistance programs such as TANF. Up until the creation of Supplemental Security Income program in 1973, the state-federal public welfare system from the New Deal legislation was mostly intact (Hansan, 2011). It practically stripped them of everything that they had during those times. The Great Depression made it difficult for anyone to thrive let alone live. The Great Depression caused black farmers to lose their farms resulting in them moving north in seek of employment. African Americans were always the last resort when seeking employment. Still it was somewhat easier to find employment in the northern states than the southern states. When the first reliefs programs began to roll out Black people did not receive as aid as white people received. The New Deal indirectly affected African Americans in a positive way just like it did most Americans during that time. The New Deal initiated new labor laws that ushered the creation of the Union which in turn assisted in improving wages for employees. The Social Security Act did guarantee some type of income to Americans after they have reached the age where they are considered unemployable. As great as the Social Security Act was there was still some major issues with it. It was only benefited Americans who were able to maintain jobs. The Americans whose employment was considered disposable did not qualify for such aid. Over time, some provisions were made to the two-class system within the Social Security Act. The changes allowed Americans who were not working regularly employed throughout the course of their life to be able to receive some type of supplement.
