Rumors are like news, some can be true without hardcore evidence, and they can be false. While conspiracies are plots and plans that intentionally causes harm. Both can be detrimental, and some can serve a purpose to warn people of a problem. Rumors are persistent that evolved since the beginning time of human life. The idea is that rumors are information that is filled with uncertainty that causes. Rumors are born and reborn by giving information to a subject when uncertainty about an issue rises, especially regarding people’s fear about politicians. Rumors and conspiracies in politics are produced to divide people to get their loyalty. “A Psychology of Rumor,” written by Robert H. Knapp, explains three types of rumors. The wish rumors that bring hope to a situation or idea, bogie rumor that creates fear and anxiety in people, and the wedge-driving rumor are always seen in politics and wars to take an opponent by dividing people to win their loyalty. Rumors and conspiracies such as, Obama didn’t want to pledge allegiance to the flag. He is a terrorist. Obama wasn’t born in America. These are some of the rumors that came to be to put uncertainty in people when it came to Barack Obama presidentially. Politics in history is known for the outrages of rumors and conspiracies thrown out to the news to warn people of a politician. For, instance the bogie rumor and the wedge-driving rumor, Barack Obama 2008, was accused of ineligibility to run for presidential due to claims he wasn’t born in America, and he was a Muslim. No big secret, a lot of Americans are suspicious of Muslims, especially after 9/11. Thanks to the conspiracies along the horrible actions of 9/11 played the part of people’s fear. The rumor built awe and anxiety in choosing a candidate that may play a role with the enemy but also for the people that was loyal question their loyalty and switching sides. “According to fact-checkers [the rumor] circulated among disgruntled Clinton supporters,” (Zurcher 2). Warning the people of America that the person they are looking to vote for may not be eligible to run for president and may not be who he says he is. But maybe the enemy they fear. This accusation should have never become to be born because section 301 (c) of the immigration and nationality act states that a person born out of the country by a parent that is a United States citizen, automatically grants that child to be United States Citizen. “Truth is in the ear of the beholder,” written by Gregory Rodriguez, stated clearly that, “It’s easy to assume that lack of education is the culprit when it comes to people believing rumors against logic and evidence,” (2). A rumor has life, without using syllogisms to get factionalism, but through people framework of their personal beliefs when in limbo. Rumor can be a sophisticated messenger because once a story is spread, some people cannot come to logical thinking that a rumor is just a myth. People have their opinions. In humans’ nature, people don’t process information with a neutrally thinking, but process information by biased assimilation. People go by their wants and their desires of a rumor creating a complicated feeling of cognitive dissonance of how they view a situation based on how they feel, ignoring the evident facts. Just as Paul Farhi said something along the line, when it comes to misleading and absurd rumors, there is no changing that rumor because people fear to take over when there is uncertainty. To eliminate people’s uncertainty about the birthplace of Obama, Obama decided to show his birth certificate. Showing proof, he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961, after Hawaii became part of America on August 21 in 1959. Obama continues to speak his truth of not being a Muslim but a Christian. Even after showing his birth certificate, his critics questioned the birth certificate demanding hospital records. Education plays no role in rumors, but rumors are bought onto being. Obama created a website called “FightTheSmear.com” to try to put a kill to rumors that were escalating. “Considering that rumors often represent a real attempt to get at the truth, the best way to fight them is to address them in as comprehensive a manner as possible,” (Singal 4). Professionals praised President Obama for responding to the rumors. According to some professionals, one of the reasons why rumors are spread because people want to make sense of the claim and get closer to the truth of it. While in politics, others have the wisdom of not responding to the rumors, because people cannot tell the difference between what is real and was is narration. The uncertainty in people came up again about President Obama, statues of being an American in 2011 of March. Trump gave the rumor life again, stating how he had doubts about President Obama’s birth certificate. Trump continued to go out of his way to try to prove that President Obama was not a U.S Citizen. He tweeted statements, such as having an “extremely credible source, that the birth certificate was a fraud, raising suspicion about the death of a Hawaiian health official who verified copies of Mr. Obama birth certificate,” (Zurcher 4) and so many other conspiracies. According to Knapp, Trump drove many wedge rumors about Obama, and currently still is. Now he is going against Obama former Vice President Joe Biden making rumors such as “creepy joe,” and U.S Senate Kamala Harris questioning her birth statues, giving life again to old rumors. In a time of a pandemic of uncertainty, a virus is killing hundreds of thousands of people. President Donald Trump using his has neglected on the matter of how vital the Corona Virus is. Dismissing the fact that people are out of a job due to the pandemic of the virus, but choices to stay focus on the conspiracies that are causing uncertainty in people on what is going on. “People spread [rumors, such as Donald Trump] to shore up their social networks, and boost their own importance within them. To the extent people do have an agenda in spreading rumors, its directed more at the people they’re spreading them to, rather than at the subject of the rumor,” (Singal 3). When President Trump does focus on the Corona Virus, he comes up with these deranged rumors on how his enemies are using the pandemic of this virus is to destroy him in a political manner creating chaos and confusion that is irrelevant to the issues. But giving life to these rumors is keeping him relevant in social media for good T.V and entertainment. However, President Trump gives people certainty that the virus is not a big deal as he stated, “Now we have tested almost forty million people. By so doing, we show cases, ninety-nine of which are totally harmless. Results that no other country can show because no other country has the testing that [the United States] have,” (Smith 2). President Trump was creating wishful rumors, misleading people, minimizing the real impact that the Corona Virus has on people. People are literally dying due to outrages rumors, such as saying a virus that is killing people is harmless. Yet, some people have their minds set as Trump stated the virus is harmless, and refuse to wear a face mask to prevent the spread or get it from another person. Hope rumor that is given life, is having a huge impact on people’s lives. Obama fighting rumors and Trump is spreading rumors like a fireball, show signs of dealing with rumors and why rumors are brought to life. In politics, rumors serve a purpose, and that is to create uncertainty in people’s emotions while coming up with a solution to put doubt to rest. No matter if it is true or false, as long as it makes sense to a person and goes along with their beliefs to win people votes. When facing the uncertainty of a fireball that hit you, such as a rumor, it should be met to be put out on the fireball. The more a rumor is spread, the more reasonable it seems to be. However, the wisdom that plays in politics suggests let a rumor be until it dies out. Just as psychologist Knapp stated in “Truth is in the ear of the beholder” stated, “to decry the ravages of rumor-mongering is one thing, to control it yet another” (Rodriguez 3). Its always important to have facts and being educated on a story to help eliminate rumors and control them, for rumors are giving life through information. Information that doesn’t necessarily have to be true. Creating chaos in a world and installing fear into people that are uncertain about the uncertainty, especially when it comes to politics, wars, and propaganda. Rumors are carefully distributed out and thought through for people’s personal gain. Through folktales of life lessons, to humor another person, or being a malicious person to get attention, rumors can live an inordinate length of time. It is becoming easily dispersed through fear. People create rumors and continually spread them because they want the truth, driven by fear, bring comedy to a situation, bring a wedge between people, and bring hope based on people’s emotions and expressions. Giving life to a rumor through uncertainty keeps it going to bring assurance to people based on their mindset beliefs.
