Over the next few weeks, you will write a five-page essay comparing and contrasting the scores of two different films by two different composers from two different eras. The focus of the essay is to examine how one composer is influenced by another, using the two scores as evidence. You must meet the following criteria: The films must both either be of a similar genre (e.g., two westerns, two horror films, etc.) or two versions of the same story (e.g., the Frankenstein story, a Three Musketeers story), or one can be a remake of the other (e.g., Planet of the Apes). Whichever films you choose must have release dates at least 20 years apart. They do not necessarily need to be films we have studied up to this point. Your choices must be approved by the instructor, which is this week’s assignment. You must be able to show some common threads between the styles and scoring approaches of the two composers. These may include orchestration, physical vs. psychological approach, ways similar problems are solved, etc. Examine the similarities and differences between the two composers, and speculate as to why this is the case. For example, did one composer study with the other? Perhaps different economic situations (e.g., 1930s Depression-era vs. 1990s boom) or different production environments (e.g., studio system vs. independent production) may have influenced their approaches or choices for the particular films you are examining. You must include the following information: a short biographical sketch of each composer, listing their other notable scores a brief synopsis of the plot of each film, noting any parallels between them detailed analyses of both scores, outlining any notable similarities or differences, including: descriptions of the relationships between the music and drama thematic relationships and development used by the composers You may include short 1-2 line excerpts (motifs, phrases, etc.) within the body of the text to illustrate your examples. use of orchestration (ethnic or exotic instruments, large vs. small ensembles, nontraditional use of conventional orchestra, electronic instruments, etc.) The bulk of the essay should be made up of your analysis of the two composers’ approach to each movie. Your paper must be uploaded through the Turnitin filter on the final assignment page in order to check your work. You must cite all references (bibliography, footnotes, etc.), including any URLs. The following criteria will be used in grading this assignment: strong opening statement (outlining the purpose of the project) 5% composer biographies (should be concise) 10% composer filmographies (include names and dates of at least 3 other significant scores) 10% structure / body of paper, including: balance between analysis of the two scores 20% support of points using musical examples 25% discussion of orchestration 10% quality of your writing, grammar and spelling 10% effective summary statement 5% bibliography (citing all sources) 5% Note: This essay will be not be due until lesson 13. Use your time wisely. The films Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In delve into numerous themes related to concepts discussed in your textbook. Both films include discussions concerning media representation, the social construction of masculinity and femininity, gender inequity, sexism, violence, rape, self-image, eating disorders, race, body image, media centralization, labeling, deviance, the sexualization of young girls, objectification of women’s bodies, and suicidal and homicidal violence, to name a few concepts. Discuss the main points of both documentaries, paying keen attention to the aforementioned issues, and, its effects on the social expectations and lives of young girls, boys, men, and women. Windows Server Deployment Proposal   Overview Each student will create a detailed, organized, unified technical solution given the scenario described below. The submission will be in a written format, with at least one diagram, and may include additional diagrams, charts or tables. The assignment is meant for students to enhance their mastery of the material and to provide a creative and realistic way in which to apply knowledge from this course.    Scenario “We Make Windows”, Inc. (referred to as “WMW”) has hired you as an IT consultant for implementing their Windows network infrastructure. WMW is a new advertising firm, and they are currently hiring staff, establishing two locations, and have a need to get their internal IT services configured. They do not yet have an IT staff, but when they do, the IT staff will take over all aspects of IT administration. You are required to supply WMW with a solution which describes the implementation and configuration of their core IT services. Cost is not a significant concern – WMW wishes to implement the “right” solution to fit their needs now and for the next 2-3 years.   There are several details about WMW which will have an impact on your choices: ·         WMW will start with 90 employees, in the following departments: o   Executives (9 employees) – manage and run the company o   Accounts and Sales Department (15 employees) – perform market research and maintain accounts o   Creative, Media and Production Department (49 employees) – advertising o   Human Resources and Finances (12 employees) – perform HR and financial duties o   IT (5 employees) – manage IT for the company o   WMW will have two sites, one in Los Angeles and one in New York. (With the required diagram, and other images, title page, etc., the final submission may end up being more than 10 pages in length.) It must be double-spaced, have 1-inch margins, and use 12-point Times New Roman or 10-point Arial/Helvetica font. A title page is required; APA format for the title page is optional. ·         At least one diagram must be included (not counted towards the minimum length described above); this could be a diagram describing Active Directory components, DHCP/DNS design, file share hierarchy, or anything else that is worth displaying graphically to enhance the reader’s understanding of the proposal. Additional diagrams, images, or tables are welcome. ·         The submission must cover all of the 6 major topics outlined above. Each choice should be explained with technical and business reasoning. The solution should be reasonably detailed. Additional topics may be covered as desired. ·         The structure of the final submission is flexible. There is no specific format required, although it should be organized logically and represent a single, unified solution. It is likely that the format will include separate sections for each of the 6 topics required, as well as a summary. ·         At least two non-textbook, non-LabSim, non-Wikipedia reference is required; preferably, this would be a “best practice” guide or similar content from Microsoft or an experienced provider of Microsoft solutions. ·         Be sure to properly quote or cite any sources used. APA format is required for in-text citations and the list of works cited at the end. It is expected that you are already familiar with UMGC’s “Policy on Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism.” It is available in the Academic Policies section of the Syllabus. In its simplest form, if you are using text from a source, you must cite and/or quote it. If plagiarism is found, then there will be a penalty to the grade.
