CHAPTER 1: THE FRUSTRATED NEW EMPLOYEE.

CHAPTER 1: THE FRUSTRATED NEW EMPLOYEE The Frustrated New Employee: This short case provides an opportunity to provoke discussion about organizational behavior overall. The instructor can present the definition of organizational behavior, the study of which “broadly explores the behavior and influence of individuals, groups, and structures in an organization and their impact on the function and effectiveness of that organization.” The case demonstrates how behaviors and groups affect employee feelings and functions. A new employee enters an organization and finds a divergence between her expectations, the orientation she received, and how she is treated in the organization. Students should note about how people in organizations treat each other differently, often as a result of their relative positions and power. In addition, values that are expressed or written by organizational members might not be practiced. The behaviors of organizational members can be seen as a primary reason for the frustration and unhappiness of employees. Discuss the case and then speak about your personal experiences. Explore what you would do and how belonging to a profession in healthcare might change one’s behavior. CHAPTER 1: THE FRUSTRATED NEW EMPLOYEE A new hospital employee arrived at orientation and was impressed with the time the leaders took to speak with her about the company’s values, especially teamwork. She had just graduated from college and was beginning work as a medical technician. She dreamed of working with the team of physicians, scientists, and other researchers to help in the discovery of new treatments. After two days of invigorating orientation, she was ready to exemplify the values she had been taught. However, when she began her job, she quickly learned that “teamwork” often meant doing what she was told and not speaking up. She tried to engage with the physicians and listened in on their conversations, but they tended to ignore her, and, most of the time, she only understood about half of what they were talking about. She was frequently frustrated and found that only people who listened to her were the new medical technicians during their breaks. CASE QUESTIONS 1. What should the new employee do? Be thorough in your explanations! 2. How does the professionalization of health care personnel influence the situation?
