Social Cognition Week 7 Assignment: Stereotype Threat

Assignment: Stereotype Threat

Stereotype or social identity threat can be construed as an internal, cognitive state in which the individual is aware of negative stereotypes against his or her group and which can impact individual thoughts and/or behavior (Aronson & McGlone, 2009, p. 154). Considerable research demonstrates that stereotype threat can impact recipient behavior and can be destructive in relationships and in ones personal view of him- or herself. Despite the prevalence and potential detrimental effects of stereotype threat, there are ways to decrease stereotype threat, including, but not limited to, reframing ability, use of role models, and self-affirmation.

For this Application Assignment, analyze stereotype threat and the conditions necessary for this type of threat to occur. Consider ways you might remediate a stereotype threat.

The assignment (57 pages)

Define stereotype threat.
The target of stereotype threat and the source of stereotype threat interact and are believed to result in six possible forms of stereotype threat. Explain at least four possible forms of stereotype threat being sure to include a thorough example for each.
Explain how the experience of stereotype threat can depend on self-perception versus group identity. Be sure to include discussion of how that experience might differ if an individual belongs to more than one group at risk for stereotype threat. Use examples to illustrate your point.
Explain two consequences of a stereotype threat and elaborate why these consequences can occur.
Explain three ways to possibly remediate stereotype threat.
For all of the above, be specific and provide examples to illustrate your points. Also be sure to use the current literature to support your response.

Social Cognition Week 4 Assignment: Application of Theories

Assignment: Application of Theories

Attribution theory is one of the hallmarks within the field of social cognition. Theories such as Heiders nave psychology theory, Jones and Davis correspondent inference theory, and Kelleys covariation model provide seminal contributions to this field. Although these theories differ in level of complexity and detail, all attempt to provide a consistent explanation why humans behave as they do.

For this Application Assignment, select one of the two vignettes provided. Then, consider two attribution theories and analyze the constructs of each theory. Apply the key constructs of the theories to the vignette, and analyze how the theory may explain what occurred.

Vignette #1: Molly, 62-year-old Caucasian American Female

Molly exited her doctors office and promptly lit a cigarette. In doing so, she missed her bus and would have to wait an additional 30 minutes for the next one. She thought about Dr. Wilson, her primary care physician, who was not too concerned about her smoking. Then, she thought about Dr. Smith, her cardiologist, who had clearly stated that she needs to stop smoking. Waiting for the next bus was no problem for Molly; she could enjoy a second cigarette.

Vignette #2: James, 35-year-old African American Male

Anticipating the long weekend ahead to be filled with social opportunities with friends and family, James felt overwhelmed and left work early on Thursday. While en route, James thought that perhaps having some quiet time now might make the weekend more enjoyable. Besides, his stomach was bothering him and he had a sizable headache. He worried a little about what his office mates thought of his departure, as this was the sixth time in the past month he had left early.

The assignment (57 pages)

Select one vignette and select two attribution theories.
Choose two theories from the three theories
Heider’s naive psychology theory
Jones and Vavis’ correspondent inference theory
Kelly’s covariation model
Provide a brief analysis of the two theories you selected.
Explain how the key constructs of each theory can be applied to the vignette.
Explain how each theory might explain what causes the situation in the vignette.
As you complete your academic comparison, elaborate on the vignette, including how the person might behave if he or she was in a different situation or setting.
Provide examples to support your response.

Provide a reference list for all resources used in this assignment. While you are encouraged to use supplemental resources in addition to any course resources listed for this week, be sure to use the weekly learning resources before utilizing supplemental ones

Social Cognition Week 3 Discussion 1: Sense of Self (Day 5) Student Response

Discussion 1: Sense of Self

Social psychologists contend that a human can organize his or her understanding of the self in multiple ways, including formation of the self-concept, use of self-schemas, self-esteem, and self-efficacy.

Such self distinctions are supported through research depicting three main self functions, including reflexive consciousness, or the ability to look upon oneself; interpersonal engagement, or the awareness of oneself as interacting with others; and executive function, or the self’s role in taking control of daily functioning. Finally, there are at least three key motives for why the self functions as it does, including the need to learn more about oneself, the need to believe positively about oneself, and the need for consistency in self-knowledge.

For this Discussion, think about a recent event in your life and consider how the three main functions of self impact your overall sense of self.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues postings.

By Day 5

Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues postings in one or more of the following ways:

Ask a probing question.
Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
Offer and support an opinion.
Validate an idea with your own experience.
Make a suggestion.
Expand on your colleagues posting.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.

Social Cognition Week 3 Discussion 1: Sense of Self (Day 3)

Discussion 1: Sense of Self

For this Discussion, think about a recent event in your life and consider how the three main functions of self impact your overall sense of self.

By Day 3

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a brief description of the recent event you selected. Then, describe one of the three main functions of the self (ability to engage in reflexive consciousness, ability to interact with others, or ability to control daily functioning) that were evident in the event you selected and explain why. Finally, explain which of the three motives for self-functioning (need to learn, need to believe positively about yourself, or need for consistency of self-knowledge) may have motivated your actions in the event you selected and why. Use the Learning Resources and the current literature to support your response.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
