In this course, we are considering protests movements: what are their aims? What makes them legitimate? What makes them reasonable? Why do they happen? This article examines how a radical leftwing magazine called Adbusters played a major roll in kicking off the Occupy Wall Street protests of the mid-2010’s, and profiles the managing editor of the magazine, Kalle Lasn. Read the article, and respond to what you read there. Consider a few questions: 1: What does Kalle Lasn mean when he says, “We aren’t just playing the old lefty game where you are pointing your fingers and going, ‘Look at this terrible thing that’s happening here. Let’s go there and get those bastards.’ We’re actually saying something positive.”? 2: Is that really a different way to start a protest? Why or why not? 3: To what extent do you remember “Occupy Wall Street” protests? If you don’t remember them well, why do you think that is? What do you imagine the concerns of the protest might have been?
