Why and how did the city come to play such a central role? 2. How did the construction of the Erie Canal affect New York City, politically, socially, and economically? 3. In the textbook, Reitano notes that no other period witnessed so many incidents of violent struggle than the mid- to late-1830s. What were some of these incidents? What can explain the turbulence of this period in New York City? 4. According to Reitano, Tammanys legacy both promoted and demoted democracy. Evaluate this allegation and explain the ways in Tammany Hall both helped and harmeddemocracy and the people of NYC. To answer an identification (part 1), think of it as a short newspaper article. It should be written in full sentences in paragraph form, and should provide information that answers the following questions: 1) Who or What? 2) When? 3) Where? 4) Why? 5) Historical Significance (Influence or Consequences) Think of the audience for your identifications as your fellow students; ask yourself what they need to know to understand this term, person, or event. The more concrete information (definitions, dates, examples) you provide in your answer, the better. At the same time, however, remember that identifications are not full-length essays. You should craft a well constructed paragraph, but do not write pages of information here. Below is a sample of what an outstanding identification answer should look like: The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 The railroads were an early focal point of labor unrest. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877, which occurred during the Gilded Age in the late 19th century, was staged in response to wage cuts that the railroads instituted as a result of declining revenues during the depression that followed the Panic of 1873. The strike began with workers at the B&O Railroad, but soon spread to other lines. In ten states the militia was called out to put down the strike, and the militiamen and strikers each fired on one another. Ultimately, federal troops were used to restore order. By the time they did, over a hundred people had been killed, many more were injured, and millions of dollars worth of property had been destroyed. It was the worst labor violence in U. S. history to that time. This strike scared many Americans, who were awakened to the realization of the possibility of violent class conflict in the United States.
