Discussion: The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle
In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.
In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.
To Prepare:
Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.
Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.
Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.

cause the demand elasticity to have different prices, varies due to different market segments and regions. Some of the other factors that are high elasticities are the air carriers, and the routes available. Since the consumers have multiple options to choose from, this makes the airline company and the routes high elasticity. According to Litman (2019), Business travelers tend to be less price elastic than leisure travelers. Fare elasticities on short-haul routes were generally higher than on long-haul routes. This reflects the opportunity for inter-modal substitution (e.g., travelers can switch to rail or automobile). The demand elasticity faced by individual air carriers is higher than that faced by the whole market. Virtually all studies estimate income elasticities to be above one, generally between +1 and +2. This indicates air travel increases with higher incomes.
To be able to determine the total costs to the user for air travel, you would have to take into account all of the costs for that specific airline. For instance, the airlines have to pay for fuel, terminal costs of the airports they are departing and arriving to, employee costs, and maintenance costs. All of these factors factor into the total traveling cost for a single user. The prices may vary between air carriers because of operating costs may be cheaper for one than it is to another. It may vary as well based on the airplane that is being used. Some use more fuel than others and different routes will change this as well. The total costs for air travel also has to factor in any baggage fees depending on the airline and the government costs or taxes associated with that ticket they purchase. Another factor that airlines have to factor in, is the demand for that route. If it is a very common route, typically the price of a ticket is cheaper than a route that is less traveled on and does not have as many passengers.
According to an article published in fox news, there are 9 factors that influence the price of your ticket. These 9 factors are, price of oil, flight distance, competition, timing of purchase, timing of flight, big brother factor(government taxes), passenger appetite, empty middle seats, and fees. Using these factors you can determine the total costs of to the user for air travel.

Review the Harbor City Behavioral Health Center media, paying particular attention to the current IT systems in place at the center. As you review this information, consider if the present IT systems are capable of supporting the HCBHC’s strategic plan goals and initiative, and what changes/additions are required. Specifically review the following:
HCBHC Brochure with mission statement, goals, and services.
Organizational Chart with major departments: HR, Operations (incl. IT), Comptroller, Legal (incl. Regulatory), and Clinics, as well as department overviews covering functions and roles.
HCBHC Annual Report with findings/recommendations and associated assessment data.
Corporate Memo on the community need for additional services to support the aging baby boomer population and the alarming increase in adolescent substance abuse.
In addition consider the following readings from the current week:
Chapter 13, “Health Information Systems and Strategy” from your course text, Shortell & Kaluzny’s health care management: Organization design & behavior.
Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. (2012). The value of health information technology in behavioral health: A health information exchange focus.
Miller, J.E., Glover, R.W., & Gordon, R.Y. (2014). Crossing the behavioral health digital divide: The role of health information technology in improving care for people with behavioral health conditions in state behavioral health systems.
National Council on Behavioral Health. (2013). The behavioral health IT Act (H.R. 2957): Coordinating care, lowering cost.
Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. (2012). Behavioral health roundtable: Using information technology to integrate behavioral health and primary care. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Explain whether the center’s current IT systems are capable of supporting the center’s targeted goals for improvement and initiatives to increase services to the community outlined in the strategic plan.
What additional provisions in terms of hardware, software, network, bandwidth, security, and training need to be made to support the HCBHC strategic plan goals and initiatives?
In your analysis, be sure to take into consideration logistics, HR related activities, regulations, etc.
