Eugene, OR: Harvest House. ISBN: 9780736943543. (Chap 2) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Instructions As we consider the broad topic of integration of science (psychology, in our case) and theology, consider this conversation that a student had with his pastor: Pastor: I know you are studying counseling at Liberty University. As you know, I received training in theology, and I well remember Jay Adams’ famous statement: “Psychology is just sinful human beings sinfully thinking about sinful human beings.” I am deeply concerned about the wisdom of pursuing this degree at Liberty. Personally, I think psychology is secular “mumbo jumbo.” The Pastor continues: In my opinion, all psychological problems are simply problems of faith, and should be addressed through prayer, repentance, and seeking counsel from the Holy Spirit. After all, you, as a sinner, cannot be expected to help other sinful people–can you? Can psychology really be integrated with theology? What’s your opinion?” How would you respond to your pastor? In your dialogue with your pastor (“Pastor, thanks for allowing me to answer your concerns. Personally, I agree/disagree. . . “) include the following: Explain why you agree or disagree with Adams’ quote, based on your understanding of the course materials. Adequately justify your position considering both Adams’ presuppositions and implications for Christian counseling How does your own worldview largely determine your answer? What does the quote say about sources of knowledge, per Entwistle’s discussion? Which model of integration do you seem to be supporting in your responses? What is the one best argument for attempting to integrate the two disciplines? Make sure to justify and support your answer. Where appropriate, use in-text citations to support your assertions. Feel free to actually create a dialogue with your pastor, or provide your answer in a narrative.

Discuss “The Longest War” by Rebecca Solnit.

What would you suggest as a response to “throwing labels around”?

Using the Credo Reference (Links to an external site.) database, look up either “liberalism” or “socialism.” With the information that you find, and the information in your text, write a post that does two things:1. Gives a brief overview of what it was when it first started. 2. Explains how the term has changed. Is the term ever used in a pejorative way? How does American use of these terms compare to other countries (especially European nations)? Now consider how we use terms of political identification today in general: have you seen/experienced the misuse of terms such as liberal, conservative, moderate, left-wing, right-wing, socialist, communist? What would you suggest as a response to “throwing labels around”?

Research a Social Issue Outline on computers.

In this week’s writing assignment, you are asked to analyze the psychological/sociological dimensions of the technology you analyzed in last week’s writing assignment. Specifically, you are asked to write an outline (see attached outline example) that discusses the impact of this technology on the individual (emotions, mental health, well-being, substance use, cognitive functioning, etc.) and society (social mobility, public health trends, crime rates, social cohesion, political stability, etc.). To this end, please follow these directions: First, use the research methods we developed in Unit 2 to locate 8 articles related to the social problem you wrote about in the most recent discussion. Two of these articles can be ones you have already used. Second, please describe 2 psychological and 2 sociological impacts of this technology.
