The most common issue seen on the Cardiac Care Unit is patients that smoke or have a history of smoking. A lot of these patients end up needing or getting stents, high risk stent or needing open heart surgery because they have multiple vessel disease. Smoking is one of the biggest contributing factors of coronary artery disease and causes a lot of compilations with the heart. Therefore, smoking cession is key for better outcomes for the patients after their procedures or before it gets to that point. “Cigarette smoking is a major public health problem that causes more than 5 million deaths annually worldwide” (Herman & Sofuoglu, 2011).InterventionGiving these patients the resources that they need to help their addiction will help with better patient outcomes. The CCU RN’s see a lot of these patients and if we give them these tools early on, we could potentially prevent seeing them down the road with worse cardiac issues. As well as educating patients on behavioral treatments. For example, the smoker quit lines or in person counseling for smoking cession. According to Herman and Sofuoglu (2011), “Even a 3-minute counseling session by a physician can increase the likelihood of prolonged abstinence (OR, 1.3) compared with no counseling”. Also providing and educating them with nicotine replacement therapy during their stay. So possibly they rather stop using cigarettes after they discharged. According to Mayo clinic.org, “Only about 5% of people who try to quit tobacco succeed without a quit-smoking product.
