Critically analysing an internationally established proficiency test

Aims/Objectives: Review relevant second language assessment and testing theories Discuss current issues in second language assessment and testing theories and practices Demonstrate skills in critically analysing high-stakes international proficiency tests Assessment Description: Undertake a critical analysis of an international proficiency test (such as IELTS, OET, TOEFL, PTE Academic, CAE) using relevant second language assessment and testing theories. Critically discuss the advantages/disadvantages you identify in the test. Consider the impact of the high-stakes test on the test-takers and other relevant stakeholders, its backwash, validity, reliability, and educational, social and cultural perspectives of the test. Support your claims from the textbook readings and other scholarly sources (e.g. peer-reviewed journals, scholarly books and edited book chapters), using in-text citations and listing no less than six references. – Choose either PTE Academic or CAE for the critical analysis.
