For your final paper, you will create a mini-research proposal to demonstrate your ability to use information learned in this course and in your original statistics course to build an effective research proposal in the social sciences. Things Discussed During This Session 1. Define how psychologists acquire knowledge through the research process. Explain how to develop a research question. Identify how to read and conduct a literature review. Outline ethical concerns related to research. Describe the basics of qualitative research methods. 2. Explain how psychologists use non-experimental, correlation, and other research methods. Describe how and when to use the scientific method in psychology research studies. Identify how to conduct a good experiment in psychology considering variables and control. 3. Describe how to conduct a good experiment by anticipating extraneous variables caused by the experimenter and the researcher. Define internal and external validity in research. Identify how to control threats to validity. Explain how to use statistics to answer research questions, using descriptive statistics, correlations, inferential statistics, and effect size. 4. Define basic statistical analysis and interpretation. Describe how to design experiments with more than two groups. Identify how to design and conduct experiments with multiple independent variables. 5. Define alternative research designs in psychology. Identify how to conduct single case experimental designs. Describe how to conduct quasi experimental designs. Apply APA formatting to psychology research reports. This paper will be 5-7 pages in length, using APA format. Your paper will include: Title Page Abstract Introduction Literature Review Method Analysis Discussion Reference Page Rubric Description (The rubric with points is available for you in the assignment information): APA Formatting All APA Formatting requirements are met. This includes: Title page, Abstract, Headers, Page Numbers, Spacing, Citations, Direct/Active Efficient Writing Style, Headings, Reference page. Meets ¾ of formatting requirements Meets less than half of formatting requirements Abstract Summarizes content of research proposal using professional tone and citations as needed. Is approximately 120-250 words. Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½ Introduction Introduction includes a description of the topic, purpose of proposed study, the research question, hypothesis, variables (operationalized). The introduction tells the reader what you are researching and builds a case for WHY you are proposing to research the topic. Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½ Literature Summary The literature review tells your reader what you have learned about the topic using a minimum of three peer reviewed sources. Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½ Method This section describes the participants (how many, who are they), tools needed to conduct the research, and a procedure. Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½ Analysis Your analysis section includes a description of your method choice (what are you planning to use) and your plan for use of statistics (How you will come to understand the data). And finally, why did you make these choices? Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½ Discussion This section should include a discussion of what you expect to find if you were able to conduct this research. Discusses potential study limitations, and concluding thoughts Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½ Grammar Paper is free of typos and grammatical issues Meets ¾ of requirements Meets less than ½
