Describe a character other than Abel, but in relationship to him. What role(s) does this character play in the novel? What can be said about the person’s religious life and connections to tradition? How does this person interact with Abel—as a relative, friend, lover, victim…? These are only some of the questions you might address. Be creative. We are looking for your level of engagement with the text. You may tweak the question if you wish. For example, you might choose to analyze “the land” as a character. In a broader frame, you may wish to tackle the relationship of religion and literature—e.g., What might we learn about “religion” from fiction, with specific reference to this book and the themes we’ve addressed this semester?
