Purpose: To describe the science behind the use of selected EBP tools in the care of older adults. This paper must be your own original work. Do not collaborate with another student on this assignment. Please address all areas listed in each section below. Please organize your paper with subheadings as noted below. Select one of the following “Try This” tools from the www.ConsultGeriRN.org or https://hign.org/ web site: Modified Caregiver Strain Index (MCSI) Preparedness for Caregiving Scale Elder abuse assessment instrument (EAI) Alcohol abuse assessment and screening for older adults (SMAST-G) Mini-nutritional assessment (MNA) · Assessing and Managing Delirium in Persons with Dementia · Assessment of Fear of Falling in Older Adults: The Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) THESE ARE THE ONLY CHOICES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT Introduction (10 points) Identify the tool that you have selected to write about. Describe the tool’s length and purpose (i.e., ABC is a 20-item instrument that measures XYZ), how it is administered (self-administered, administered by RN, etc.), and how it is scored (i.e., the score is determined by summing the responses for each subscale). What setting is this tool designed for? (i.e. hospital, nursing home, home, or all settings). If there is a cut-point for “normal” versus “abnormal,” include this information. Clinical Problem (30 points) Discuss the clinical problem for which this tool was developed. You basically want to answer the question: “Why do we care about this issue?” Example: Suppose you have selected the Braden Scale. You will discuss the problem of pressure ulcers. What is the prevalence of pressure ulcers, how do pressure ulcers develop, what are the risk factors, how are they staged, why is it important to decrease the risk of developing pressure ulcers, why is it important to identify them at an early stage? Conclude this section with a brief discussion of how the Braden Scale addresses the problem. Answer the “so what?” question. Why is this tool important to people who might be at risk for or already have this problem? The Science (40 points) What is the evidence that supports the use of this tool? Search the literature for primary research studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Part I: Describe applicable studies published since 2012. If there are many studies, select those which you believe are most important to this course. For example, if there were 3 studies conducted in the USA that were applicable and two studies in Peru, you should select the US studies as they are more applicable to what you are studying in this course. The page limit is 2000 words, so select studies judiciously. You must have at least THREE studies. Summarize each of the studies. Please be sure to read more than just the abstract. Please make sure that your summary covers the pertinent points of the study. Please make sure that your summary is accurate. When you summarize make sure that you address the purpose of the study, the methodology of the study, the population used and the results. Part II: Are there any clinical guidelines that address the clinical problem and/or incorporate the use of this tool? Who wrote the guidelines and when? Summarize the guideline recommendations. Please be sure to read the entire guideline. Please make sure that your summary includes all parts of the guideline. Does the guideline recommend the use of a standardized assessment tool? If so, which one? (note-it is OK if the guideline does not address the assessment tool that you chose, however, you do need to address this in your paper).
