Thesis: The issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 focused mainly on restoring the Union. Although the executive order ensured enslave people of color could be freed, President Lincoln’s primary objective was to end the American Civil War and defeat the Confederacy. However, from 1865-1879, the Reconstruction Era was focused on protecting the rights of those newly freed people of color in the United States.
