Identify a member of the current US Congress (Eleanor Norton) who has a minority group identity
Explain his/her background and how that might be connected with his/her committee assignments (e.g. think about Davidson book on assignments and CT on EOCs policy goals). How does this member of Congress’s background differ from your group project member of Congress?
Look at his/her webpage to analyze her/his “home style” and explain how they present themselves to their constituents. Is this the way your member from the group project presented themselves to their constituents, or does it differ, and if so, explain how?
Analyze what kind of public policies he/she is proposing changes in (for example, environmental protection, climate change, health care, children, seniors, housing, criminal justice,…).
How does this person’s policy agenda differ from the member of Congress you chose for your group project (think about CT’s findings that show personal ambition is NOT why EOCs run for office.
Part 2 How is Policy Really Made: Choose a public law from a policy area that interests you.
I chose to look at was H.R.866- 116th Congress (2019-2020).
You will discuss how this bill proceeded from being introduced in the House or Senate up to final passage by both branches.
Go to www.congress.gov (Links to an external site.) and select a public law from the last thirty years (2080-2020). Click on Status of Legislation and check: Became Law.
As you research the background of this policy area, think about the problems that have occurred that requires Congress to take action on this problem.
Who introduced and (co)sponsored the bill, and speculate on why he/she identified this as a problem area needing a solution?
Which committee(s) in the House and Senate held hearings and reported it?
What were the roles of outside interests interest groups (google which groups supported/opposed the bill)?
What kind of media coverage did your bill receive (google media coverage of your bill)?
