In Tolstoy’s story “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” Pahom has real estate dealings involving three tracts of land: the initial tract close to his village; a second tract “beyond the Volga”; and a third tract owned by the Bashkirs. Pahom’s dream in Part VII also seems to recapitulate the three real estate ventures. Examine these three accounts and the dream; argue that his encounter with the Bashkirs for the third tract of land is a recapitulation and a mirroring of the previous two encounters and the dream.
