Writing is a key component of many STEM professions, but often a scarce component of
many STEM courses. This writing assignment aims to fill that gap. Specifically, the objective
of this assignment is to improve your writing for STEM themes by emphasizing the ability
to formconcise, factual statements regarding ideas whose material content is fundamentally
mathematical or scientific, a learned skill which requires persistent practice and training.
Your task is to respond to the research question drawing on the required readings and your
coursework in a formal, written essay. Further, you should collect data/evidence and do additional
background research if necessary to assist in carrying out informed, critical reflection
and analysis of the readings.
The essay should be two pages in length with standard margins and font characteristics.
There will be a penalty for essays that do not conform do this standard. The essay should be
organized in paragraphs. The first paragraph serves as an introduction, states the thesis, and
sets the context. Body paragraphs should develop and support the thesis. Each paragraph
opens with a strong topic sentence that announces the content of that paragraph and ends
with a sentence that pulls it together. The last paragraph concludes the essay by reminding
the reader how each of the economic arguments made work together to support the thesis.
When you apply concepts from the course to your argument, you are expected to carry out
economic analysis that is at the level of intermediate microeconomics. Charts and diagrams
necessarily supplement any analysis. Example essays will be provided.

Using the information provided in Canvas and any relevant outside sources, describe a policy or set of policies which aim to address the focal family issue.

The purpose of this paper is for you to connect a problem that impacts families to a policy that has been established in an attempt to address part (or perhaps all) of that problem. In developing that connection, you will need to include the following components in your paper:

1. Introduction – What is the problem?

Students will write a brief summation of the issue and how it impacts families. This should be no longer than a paragraph and MUST be informed by the content provided as well as relevant outside research.

2. Scope of the problem – How big is the problem?

Students will use the resources provided and relevant outside research to describe the scope and impact of the issue on families. Particular attention will be paid to evidence of unequal or different impacts based on gender, race, SES, age, sexual orientation, family structure, or other relevant family demographics. This section should be at least one-half page in length and should include in-text citations for source content.

3. Description of policy – What has been done to help/fix the problem?

Using the information provided in Canvas and any relevant outside sources, students will describe a policy or set of policies which aim to address the focal family issue. This section will be no more than one paragraph and should include a brief description of the policy and its purpose along with appropriate APA citations back to relevant source material.

4. Evaluation of Impact – Did the policy work? Did it fix the problem?

Students will digest information from provided sources and relevant outside source material and prepare a brief (approx. one-half page) summary of the impact the identified policy has had on the focal family issue. Citing relevant sources, using APA, the students will describe how the policy has or has not impacted the family issue (the policy’s intended consequences) as well as any unintended consequences that may have resulted from the policy’s implementation. As with the above sections, this portion should be primarily informed by research and should contain APA in-text citations for used source material.

5. Personal reaction – How do I feel about it?

Having outlined the issue, relevant policy, and its impact, students will conclude their paper with a brief discussion of their own educated opinions on the issue and policy. Students should describe their opinions in light of the information they included earlier in the paper and should discuss how those opinions were or were not influenced by their research for this paper. As this is entirely based on opinion, there is no right or wrong answer for this section. Instead, points will be based on whether the students clearly articulate their educated opinion and how they arrived at it.

Question 2: Identify Wiktorowicz’s four factors. How can these factors be applied to Nuraniyah’s study?

Response; According to the article , Wiktorowicz’s Four Factors are focused on how one individual might become a terrorist. These four factors start with a cognitive switch caused wither by identity crisis, discrimination or repression, which causes a change in one’s prior held beliefs. The second factor is when one encounters radical social movement activists while in the process of religious seeking. The third factor is frame alignment and the final factor is the deliberate act of “re-culturing” or socializing completely into a new world view (Hwang, 2018). When someone experiences all four of these conditions, the interplay of emotions caused by them may make them more likely to become a terrorist. Similarly, Nuraniyah developed a theory surrounding the ways that migrant worker women might become IS sympathizers. in this study, Nuraniyah explains that these women have experiences a cultural and cognitive opening, just as Wiktorowicz explained, that caused their beliefs to shift. Especially when they were living abroad and were separated from their families. These women searched for social and religious answers and along the way, came in contact with IS sympathizer groups, which began to shape their beliefs and change their attitudes (Hwang, 2018).
