Assignment: Needed Diversity at MTE

Introduction: You read about and practiced with some concepts related to equal employment opportunity in the workplace in the Learning Activity. Now you will apply some of these concepts to a scenario. Read the following scenario and respond in a business memo to the checklist items.

Scenario: MTE is a robotics firm that has clients all over the world but is based in the U.S., with offices in most major cities. Recently MTE has been experiencing an upsurge in discrimination lawsuits by women and minorities since they grew from 2,000 employees in 2016 to have 3,500 employees by the third quarter of 2019. A demand for their technology services exploded with the expansion of some of their clients’ high-technology needs in the medical industry. There are currently 3,000 employees in the Northeastern U.S., and 500 employees in other countries.

The lawsuits claim that women and minorities are not being hired in equitable numbers due to a discriminatory hiring system. MTE has an automated hiring system on its hiring website. Applicants first submit their resumes, which are scanned for certain educational requirements (including top 10 university degrees) and key phrases. Then those applicants that pass the initial screening take an online technology test that is timed to see how many answers they get correct within a short time frame. Those that pass this test are contacted for a group online interview using Google Hangouts™ and a few company robots that ask a series of questions from one of five possible question lists. After this third screening, they are contacted by an automated HR message to have an individual interview by an actual HR person, and subsequently a group interview by several actual managers and a robot during the same day of the individual interview. Finally, the managers make a decision and submit it to the HR department that then makes an offer of employment to the selected candidate.

You have been newly hired away from another technology firm’s HR department to work for MTE and are tasked with the following:

Describe the problems with the company’s hiring practices and the laws that have been violated.
Explain how the firm can increase employee diversity by changing the hiring practices.

Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of health in Chapter 7 of your textbook. Then, write a research paper fulfilling the following requirements.

Why is the definition of health important to health policy?
Define the term “target population” as it relates to health policy.
How do societal influences impact the identification and definition process of policy?
Research a healthcare organization and highlight how their policies align or misalign with the WHO’s definition of health.

Write a paper responding to the reading from a critical and analytical perspective. Have a conversation with the reading.
Your task in this paper is to describe the arguments in the reading, analyze them, and respond to them.

For this assignment, you are the lead incident commander for a hazardous materials incident similar to those that have been introduced in this course. In this scenario, diisocyanates [toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI)] are being unloaded at the tank farm of HLF Polyurethane Manufacturing. TDI and MDI are used as raw materials in the production of polyurethane. During the unloading process, the vapor return line ruptured and caught fire due to a nearby welding operation that provided the ignition source.

The following actions were initially taken:

The evacuation alarm was sounded and the facility emergency response team (ERT) was activated.
The plant manager and the local fire department were notified of the incident.
The incident command was established at the facility office near the main access gate to the south (this is the furthest distance within the property boundary from the incident location).
The incident commander implemented actions required under the approved emergency response plan.
The ERT was not able to immediately isolate the source of the incident.
The fire department arrived on location and assumed the incident command of the event.

Additional Relevant Information:

The facility encompasses an area measuring 2000 feet by 1400 feet.
The nearest residential community is located approximately 1000 feet to the northeast.
A plastic recycling plant is located along the south fence boundary of the refinery.
A major interstate highway runs directly parallel to the plant.
The ambient temperature on the day of the incident was 85° F and the wind was blowing at 7 mph from the southwest to the northeast.
The facility has a trained ERT that can respond to incidents.

Homeland Security: Research a domestic terrorist incident in order to complete the following evaluation:

Identify the conventional or unconventional hazard type.
Analyze the U.S. Department of Homeland Security documents that were utilized to implement the planning and response efforts.
Discuss how these documents were used to facilitate the response efforts.
Evaluate if the response agencies successfully responded to the incident. Support your answer with examples.

In Orlando, Virginia Woolf creates something of a fantasy of gender fluidity, in which the protagonist, based on her friend and lover Vita Sackville-West, can switch genders while maintaining a consistent identity and personality. Sackville-West’s son wrote, “The effect of Vita on Virginia is all contained in Orlando, the longest and most charming love letter in literature, in which she explores Vita, weaves her in and out of the centuries, tosses her from one sex to the other, plays with her, dresses her in furs, lace and emeralds, teases her, flirts with her, drops a veil of mist around her.”

Write a paper on addressing the following questions:

What rhetorical elements of fantasy or romance does Woolf use in the telling of Orlando? What does the fact that Orlando’s freedom comes largely from privilege and wealth tell us about Woolf’s historical/cultural context? Based on the portrayals of gender in her work, does Woolf believe that gender has bearing on an individual’s identity? What messages about gendered social and economic practices does Woolf suggest? For this assignment, you will read the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and Thomas Jefferson’s Letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802. Once you have read these founding documents and Jefferson’s letter, you will write a 2–3-page paper (double-spaced, 1-inch margins) adhering to the format specified in the Course Style Guidelines document, comparing each of them. When comparing the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, pay particular attention to the themes apparent in both documents and comment on which document came first and why that is important.

You must also answer the question, “What do you think the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution thought about the separation of church and state or about the separation of God from government?” (Note: these are not the same thing.)
