Essay #5 Justice and Access to Healthcare During a Pandemic
Directions:
Submit the written portion of the exam using the Essay#5 link in the Assignments folder in Course Materials. (Please use one of the following file extensions: .doc, docx, or .pdf. Do not use the .pages extension. I can’t view it!)
Advice:
(1) Accurately and robustly represent positions you disagree with. (2) Carefully follow the essay instructions, completing each of the required sections and staying within the length requirement. (3) Read your essay out loud to yourself or to someone else to detect unclear writing. (4) Explain things in such a way that your essay is understandable to a reasonable person who is not acquainted with the readings from class.
Grading scale:
The essay is graded out of 10 points. The value of the assignment is half of the final exam value, which as a whole is 15% of the course grade. I grade each part of the essay to which points have been distributed with traditional letter grades in mind, though converted into points. So, if part (1) of your essay, which is worth 2 points, merits a B, then it would be assigned 1.6 points (that is, 80%). Having graded each part, I then, add up the points for the whole essay.
If you earn 100% of the distributed points for a part of the essay (e.g., part (1) of essay question #1, worth 10 points), then your response was well-written, thoroughly addressed all of the required elements of that part of the question and did so in such a way that exhibited an impressive mastery of the material.
If you earned 90% of the distributed points for a part of the essay, then your response was well-written, addressed all of the required elements of that part of the question and did so in such a way that exhibited a good understanding of the material.
If you earned 80% of the distributed points for a part of the essay, then your response was relatively clear, addressed most if not all of the required elements of that part of the question and in such a way that exhibited a generally adequate understanding of the material.
If you earned 70% of the distributed points for a part of the essay, then your response may have been somewhat unclear, did not address all of the required elements of that part of the question and indicated a somewhat inadequate understanding of the material.
If you earned 60% or less of the distributed points for a part of the essay, then your response to this particular part of the essay may have contained significant problems with clarity and organization, failed to address multiple or significant required elements for this part of the essay question, and/or indicated serious problems in your understanding of the relevant material.

Essay Case Study (modified from “Ethical Questions During a Pandemic” National Collaborating Center for Health Public Policy, March 2010):
The Regional Hospital is a major trauma center with a large emergency department and intensive care unit (ICU). During the outbreak of a pandemic coronavirus crisis, the ICU is filled to capacity with patients suffering from life-threatening medical conditions, including complications from influenza-like bacterial pneumonia.
The emergency department calls the ICU seeking to admit Mr. M, who was brought to the emergency room with a severe but potentially reversible brain injury after a bicycling accident.
One alternative is to move one of the current ICU patients to a medical unit in order to make room for Mr. M. However, the ICU staff reports that all of their patients need ventilator support, and there are no other ventilated beds available in the hospital.
Another alternative is to send Mr. M to another unit in the hospital. However, given Mr. M’s injuries, it is clear that this would overtax the clinical capabilities of the health care staff, who are not trained in critical care and who are already struggling to care for other patients.
The final alternative is to transfer Mr. M to another health care facility. However, the pandemic has overwhelmed all hospitals in the region, and there are no available ICU beds anywhere else.
An ICU patient passes away. There is now a bed available in the ICU for Mr. M.
However, just as his transfer is about to be made…
An ICU nurse named Ms. A is admitted with severe difficulty breathing. It is determined that she has been infected with the coronavirus, which she may have contracted while caring for patients in the hospital’s ICU. She needs immediate ventilation support, which is only available in the ICU bed designated for, but not yet occupied by, Mr. M.
At the same time another patient, Ms. T is admitted with similar symptoms. It is also determined that she has been infected with the coronavirus. She needs immediate ventilation support, which is only available in the ICU bed designated for, but not yet occupied by, Mr. M.
Ms. T and Ms A are both in their 50s. Ms. A. is white and, as an ICU nurse has medical insurance and a good income. Ms. T is a person of color and comes from a lower socioeconomic background, because of her poverty she has not had access to routine medical care and, as a consequence, has a congenital heart disease that would have been treated had her family had medical insurance when she was a child.

Write an essay on Muslims in the Russian Empire – accommodation and resistance.

Topic: Muslims in the Russian Empire – accommodation and resistance. Your essay should address the position of Muslims within the Russian Empire, citing at least one way in which the Russian Empire attempted to accommodate its Muslim subjects and at least one way in which Muslims resisted Russian rule.

Detailed instructions: Your essay does not have to cover all Muslims of the Russian Empire in all time periods. You might choose to focus on the nineteenth century, for instance, and/or you might want to focus in particular on one or two regions (for instance, the Volga, the Caucasus). You might also want to consider the divisions within Muslim communities during times of resistance (consider, for instance, the figure of Hadji Murat or the conflict created by the 1898 Andijan Uprising reflected in the poem by a resident of Namangan).

Every good history essay takes a position, and yours should as well. You might, for instance, weigh in on how effective Russian strategies for accommodating Muslims were, or you might think about the extent to which Islam mattered in Muslim-led resistance. A good thesis is one that your reader might argue against – but with enough evidence in the body of the essay, your reader should be convinced by the end of the essay that your interpretation/position is a good one.

How do the psychological shifts the characters in the novel resemble psychological shifts in the people involved in your news story?

Lord of the Flies – Final Paper
In the novel, the author makes direct comments on life and society through the use of allegory. After finishing the story and thinking about all of the possible symbols within and what themes they might relate to, look over and choose one of the following topics to establish a link between the themes of Golding’s novel and the modern world to explain how the ideas represented in the allegory are still relevant to our time.
YOUR OPTIONS (and you can propose/evolve from this):
The Development of the Teenage Brain
If the characters were older, how might they solve some of their problems better? How do they reveal “typical” characteristics of eleven year old males?
Is aggression/dominance expected?
Would it be the same for females?
Are the “littluns” behaving typically?
Bullying
How could Piggy have avoided being a victim?
How could others have helped the hunters to not bully?
Why does Jack “not want to play anymore”?
Is Jack being sadistic? Roger? Is this to his advantage in terms of survival? What are the characteristics of the island that encourage bullying?
Spread of Fear
What parallels can be made between individuals and nations? Does it allow for the survival of their society?
Does it bring them to their destruction?
Is it a necessary evil?
Coming into Power – Leadership/Government
Is democracy shown? Fascism? Communism? Anarchy? Utopia? How can the island serve as a microcosm?
Philosophical – Questions about Humanity
Look into the philosophers – Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Thomas Hobbes Which philosopher does the story align with?
Do flaws in human nature lead to flaws in society?
Were they innocent before they landed on the island?
Are rules a necessity?
Survival
What character traits foster being a successful survivor in a group? What does educational, sociological, biological, and historical research show about how communities form from randomly selected people (like students in a class, survivors of a plane crash)?
Look up biographies/histories like: Mutiny on the Bounty, Pitcairn Island, Shackleton/Antarctica, etc. What similarities are shown? Does the television show Survivor use the best techniques (tribes, alliances, etc.)?
How do leaders emerge? Maintain their leadership?
Do people need to join together in order to survive? What social constructs are necessary?

Current News
Select a current news story—global, national, or local—and draw parallels between that news story and the text
● How do the psychological shifts the characters in the novel resemble psychological shifts in the people
involved in your news story?
● How does Golding’s representation of man’s destructive nature mirror the destruction you see in the news
event you selected?
● How does society fail/prevail in matters of human survival and the greater good of the populace?
● How do the morally and/or ethically correct people in your news story experience the same treatment/fate
as Simon or Piggy?
● How is power attained and maintained? Do the leaders in your current event use tactics resembling Jack’s
or Ralph’s?
● How has the issue of fear and its balance with reality played a role?
