Discuss one or more of these issues: What was the reaction of Americans to the large number of immigrants arriving from Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, in the early 1900’s?

There are six short answer questions that must be answered. They are part of discussion posts that need to be completed. Each answer needs to be 5 sentences long and demonstrate some historical evidence, in addition to your personal opinion, in order to receive full credit. It is also expected that your contributions will be carefully written, with minimal spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors.

The short answer questions:

1) Discuss one or more of these issues: What was the reaction of Americans to the large number of immigrants arriving from Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, in the early 1900’s? Why, since the U.S. was a country of immigrants, did the citizens react to immigrants in this manner? Was immigration a genuine “problem” in the 1920’s, or were the perceived difficulties just exaggerated by a group of ultra-conservative alarmists? Compare the reaction then with events concerning immigration today. What are the similarities and differences? Is immigration a problem for the country in the 21st Century?

2)How much responsibility should the federal government take in guaranteeing its citizens a minimum standard of living? How much is too much? Should we move even further in this direction (such as national health care)? Or should we move back to placing more emphasis on the state, local government, or on the individuals, themselves?

3) Did the West (the United States, England, France) do as much as could be reasonably expected during World War II to prevent the extermination of European Jews?

4) In what ways were the civil rights struggles for blacks and Hispanics similar? How were they dissimilar?

5) Should the U.S. have gotten involved in Vietnam? Once involved, was it a winnable conflict? What could the nation have done differently to have gained a victory?

6) Is the current conflict in Afghanistan comparable to the Vietnam conflict? In what ways is it the same? How is it different?

When answering these questions, just put it in a word document and copy and paste the questions onto the document and have them bolded. Then add the answers below each question.

It doesn’t actually have to be 550 words, just make sure each answer is 5 sentences long.
