Leadership can be defined as the art of motivating and inspiring people to a common purpose. Strategic leadership further defines this principle by focusing on specific, intentional, measurable objectives that emerge from mission, strategy, and logistics (our MSL model/strategic leadership cycle). Strategic leaders move their organizations to be extraordinary.
How can an organization define its greatness? It can likely do so in almost anyway that it chooses, perhaps by reaching the one-billion dollar sales mark or by owning a certain market share. An organization’s definition of what it means to be great or to be extraordinary usually connects to its mission (why it exists) and how well it meets its mission. How the leader of the organization motivates and inspires his or her people to achieve the mission is part of the strategic component of strategic leadership.
Select one of the following organizations:
It is preferable that no more than two class members create an initial post using the same organizational selection.
Provide a brief (1–2 paragraphs) description of the organization and its current leader.
Additionally, discuss any one of the following bullet point questions (addressing all items in the bullet point you select).
Over the course of this unit, we have discussed the importance of mission and vision statements. As a part of that discussion, we analyzed mission and vision statements for their effectiveness. For the Unit II Essay, you will expand on this topic.
Using your favorite search engine, research the mission and vision statements of different fortune 500 companies. Then, you will write an essay in which you compare and contrast the mission statements of two companies and the vision statements of two companies. You may use the same companies for both the mission and vision comparisons or separate companies.
Within your essay, include the following:
You are a state court judge who has been presented with the following facts. A criminal defendant was stopped by police after an officer observed him speeding. A computer check showed that the man had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for his arrest. While he was being arrested, a marijuana joint fell from his pocket. The officer searched his car and found additional illegal drugs. The warrant information was subsequently discovered to be inaccurate in the computer system- it had been dismissed. The defendant files a motion to suppress the drug evidence.
In a an essay, describe how would you rule on this motion.
Over the past seven weeks, we have explored the foundational concepts and principles of microeconomics, and we have applied them to the world around us. Take this time to share what you have learned with your classmates. In your initial post, respond to the following:
Explain how the process of completing your research project has affected your understanding of an issue or event in society.Demonstrate accurate grammar and mechanics in writing
You began your research project by reading an article from the news about a current issue or event in society. Your goal in this essay is to explain to your professor how the research and writing you have done for your research project changed your understanding of that issue or event. You will explain what changes occurred in your understanding and how those changes occurred.
Here are some questions you can consider in developing ideas for your essay:
What changes occurred in your understanding?
Do you know more about the issue/event now than you did before? (Probably!)
Do you look at the issue/event from a different perspective following your research?
Have you reconsidered opinions or assumptions that you held at the beginning of the semester?
How did those changes occur?
Which sources from your research had the greatest effect on your understanding?
Did the process of writing about your topic affect the way you thought about it?
What role did interaction with your classmates and/or professor play in your understanding of your topic?
Organizing and supporting your essay
Your essay must include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
The introduction should gain your reader’s attention, orient the reader to your topic, and state your thesis.
The body of the essay should include focused body paragraphs in support of your thesis statement. There are various ways you might choose to organize information in the body of your essay. Here are some suggestions you can consider:
You might focus each body paragraph on a step of the research process and how that step affected your understanding of the issue/event.
You might focus each body paragraph on your understanding at a particular time relative to the research process (before, during, after).
You might focus each body paragraph on a particular aspect of the issue/event and explain how your understanding of that aspect developed during your research.
The essay’s conclusion should answer the question “So what?” by placing the essay’s explanations into a larger context. To accomplish this, you can consider addressing one or more of these questions:
Will your current understanding of your event/issue affect your future actions or decisions? If so, how?
What lessons—about interpreting current events, about your field of study, about the research process—can be drawn from the experience of completing the research project?
Is research of the sort done in WRTG 112 a worthwhile activity? Why or why not?
Dr. Moses’ theory on grief and loss (as described in the Dr. Deb Gough article) provides the perspective that we, as clinicians, should listen and allow individuals to experience their grief (instead of cheering up, reassuring, “fixing”). This is a new concept to many students in health care fields.
Ø Name Dr. Moses’ 4 stages of grief & the 4 ways that he believes people typically respond when someone displays these stages of grief.
Ø After naming the 4 stages and 4 common responses, describe your own personal perspective on this. How can clinicians best respond to those who are grieving (in order to enhance healing)?
When considering our clients/patients culture and identity, we identified two reasons in which to do so:
1 – To be aware of assumptions that are made by both us and our clients/patients &
2 – To examine our own personal beliefs about the:
cause of illness – response to illness – what causes healing
and compare our beliefs about these things with what our patients/clients may believe
Ø Describe one of the “I am ______ but I am not _________” that someone shared in class that made a particular impact on you and describe why it did so (This should NOT be your own I am ___, but I am not___ – it should be one that was shared by a classmate)
Ø Describe an assumption that you might make about a particular culture or identity of your future clients/patients, and how you might handle that assumption or make a step toward being more “culturally competent”
Ø Describe how your personal beliefs about cause-response-healing might be different than your clients/patients and how you might handle these differences
How does the theory of expanding consciousness apply to our healthcare society today? Our nursing population to provide care to a diverse population of patients. Please choose either Madeleine Leininger’s or Jean Watson’s theory and explain how their theory would apply closely to the patient population or working environment that you currently serve or work with.
1. Demand vs. Marginal Revenue: A market with a single seller is referred to as a monopoly and the single seller would be referred to as a monopolist. Since a monopolist makes up the entire market, the monopolist can review the overall market demand and pick the price and quantity combination on the market demand curve that maximizes overall profits. If the market demand curve is negatively sloped (as we generally expect it to be) then if the monopolist wants to increase the quantity sold, this can only be achieved by accommodating the buyers by lowering the price (i.e., by moving down along the demand curve). Any firm facing a downward sloping demand curve is known as an imperfect competitor (or as an imperfectly competitive firm). Imperfectly competitive firms (such as monopolists, monopolistic competitors and oligopolists) all face downward sloping demand curves. This means that the marginal revenue (MR, the extra revenue from selling one more unit) is smaller than the price (P) of the last unit sold by the firm. The reason MR < P for a firm with a downward sloping demand is that the firm must cut its price on all the units it sells in order to sell an extra unit of output. Having a clear understanding of how this works is critical for understanding how imperfectly competitive firms operate.
Question 1: Carefully explain why we believe that a linear demand curve will always be associated with a marginal revenue curve that has twice the slope of the demand curve in question.
A true supply curve shows the relationship between price and quantity supplied. For the monopolist, the key issue to consider is that the monopolist does not make quantity decisions based on price, but rather based on marginal revenue.
This can be illustrated with the concept of price discrimination: The monopolist does not necessarily charge the same price for the same quantity in two separate markets for the same good, since the monopolist will first consider the elasticity of demand.
Consider the diagram below. Starting out with two different demand curves with corresponding marginal revenue curves (remember, MR has twice the slopes of the demand curve), just draw a marginal cost curve that crosses through the intersection of the two different marginal revenue curves. As you can see, since the two different MR curves represent different demand curves, the price will be different even when MC=MR gives the same quantity for each demand curve. In short, you do not have a one-for-one relationship between price and quantity, and this means that there is no stable supply curve here.

Question 2: In this context, in your own words carefully explain why economists say that a monopolistic firm does not have a true supply curve in the same sense that a perfectly competitive firm does.
Question 3: Give at least three examples of industries in which price discrimination is common. In each case make sure that you explain the nature of the price discrimination in question and why you believe it persists.
Identify one disease for which social inequalities in health have been documented (e.g., heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, etc.) in two priority populations. An example of one of your populations might include Syrian refugees, teen mothers, sex trade workers, etc. The other population you will describe must be Indigenous and within a Canadian context.
As you write you must consider the social determinants of health such as socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, race or ethnicity, immigration status, place, etc. You will be required to critically evaluate a relevant social and/or health policy or intervention that has been implemented and that is aimed at preventing the disease you have chosen in relation to your two populations of interest.
Specifically:
1) As your write please discuss this health/social challenge through the population you choose and an Indigenized social determinant of health lens.
2) In the introduction, identify and introduce the specific diseases, populations and discuss their relevance to health, nursing theory and practice.
3) Describe the evidence base (i.e., the existing research) that links the disease to your two populations of interest
4) Clearly define EACH disease. Then describe the etiology and risk factors (how EACH disease begins), how each disease can progress and possible complications.
5) A description of all POSSIBLE clinical manifestations of EACH disease.
6) Create a list of common medications used to treat each disease. Describe their intended effects, route, dosage ranges, possible reactions and nursing considerations. You may use a table and put this in an appendix if you wish.
7) Create a list of possible diagnostic and laboratory tests for each disease. Include reasons the tests are ordered, expected results, and significance to the disease. You may use a table and put this in an appendix if you wish.
8) Describe the medical interventions for EACH disease. What may a practitioner do or prescribe for each disease? Be specific.
