Write a comparative essay between the different regimes in the three countries. While answering the following questions trough the essay. It is a comparative politics class so keep that in mind.
This is about definition/categorization, i.e. the degree to which the regime fulfills or not the definition of democracy, or a particular model of nondemocratic/democratic regime.
1. What are the main features of the regimes in post-communist Russia, post-revolution Iran and post-2000 Mexico?
2. Are the current Russian, Iranian and Mexican regimes best categorized as democratic or nondemocratic? Define and distinguish between participation (voting and elections, etc.), competition (between parties and candidates) and liberties (e.g. freedom of speech, assembly, press, etc.). What evidence supports your answer (use class materials)?
3. What type (model) of nondemocratic or democratic regime?
• Provide evidence to sustain your categorization, e.g. a regime is a personalistic nondemocratic regime.
4. What are the key characteristics of civil society (political culture and political economy) in the three countries? Think about them comparatively.

The film, Sorry to Bother You, by Boots Riley, is what is known as an allegory. An allegory tells a story using a series of symbols. Ultimately, each symbol and the plot’s movement leads to the metaphorical meaning/figurative meaning of the film as a whole. This wild film is essentially created from building blocks- each inspired by American History, current societal issues and phenomena, and how the United States’ History impacts current society societal issues. Excuse me for using a cliche, but nothing happens inside a vacuum. Even the setting is symbolic and important in this film, so pay close attention(For instance, the film’s setting is Oakland, California, in a non-specified time period. There is significant African American history in this city, and the city has since been gentrified).
Under the section entitled Nonfiction Readings(which includes documentaries), write about how these historical/present societal issues are alluded to/confronted in the film? Pick two-three significant historical/current allusions to write about, and how they are portrayed in the film.
Additionally, while some sources are available on this BlackBoard under Nonfiction readings, feel free to use other themes/events the film alludes to. There may be key aspects you are interested in that I have not listed. Feel free to choose them and expand on them. For instance, social media plays a key role in this film. You may find articles about social media to answer the question:
How does social media(insert chosen subject matter) contribute to the plot’s progression? What is the Director/Screenplay Writer, Boots Riley saying about social media (or other chosen subject matter) and its use in regards to the film and crucial theme in the film’s plot progression? of the plot’s progression. What is the ultimate message(s) of the film?
Based on your revised debt covenant calculations, which, if any, debt covenant violations may occur when Topic 842 is implemented?
•To be proactive in helping avoid future covenant violations, you are recommending that the Newtons work with the bank to amend current agreements. What clauses should be added that would allow the covenants to be calculated as they are under prior GAAP? Identify options that you might suggest to the Newtons in their negotiations.
•Prior to the release of ASC Topic 842, one reason to lease rather than buy was to take advantage of “off-balance sheet financing.” Now that GAAP requires lessees to report assets and liabilities for all but very short-term leases, are there still advantages to long-term leases for the Newtons? Identify and discuss any advantages or disadvantages to continuing to lease. What recommendation will you make to the Newtons concerning continuing the long-term retail leases?
(a) dwell on a specific case of culture and personality in everyday life; (b) identify the discriminator and his or her discriminatory acts in the case; (c) pinpoint any possible victim and his or her victimization experiences in the case; (d) explore social factors and forces underlying the discrimination in the case and its escalation, alleviation, or continuation; (e) fetch from the case some sociological knowledge and insights for general understanding; and (f) include a minimum of five academic references you have used in your case study.
1) Many of the texts in class depict women characters in both powerful and subservient roles. Using two or three texts/examples from class, discuss the role of women, the depiction of the institution of marriage and gender relations.
2) While love may be a universal human emotion, it has different historical meanings, depictions and value. Choosing two or three texts or examples from class, discuss the different depictions of love (which can be romantic, familial, friendly, religious, etc). What role does love play? What institutions arise out of love? What is the relationship between love and bondage and love and freedom?
3) Choosing two or three texts from the course, describe the conflict between personal happiness and social obligation.
4) What is the meaning and purpose of work? What is the relationship between work and self? Using the novel Animals in Suits, discuss these questions.
5) Animals in Suits discusses the relationship between consumption and work, and consumption and freedom. Using examples from the novel, elaborate on these relationships. What is consumption, how does the novel define it? What is Jake’s relationship to consumption, to freedom, and to work?
6) Many of the text depict an altered modern world, where the themes of alienation, disillusion, and loneliness prevail. Choose two to three texts and analyze the theme of alienation and its relationship to modernity. How does setting or environment contribute to or convey alienation? What causes loneliness? How do characters react to feelings of disillusion and loneliness?
7) Choosing two or three texts from the course, describe the conflict between authority figures and those that they subdue. Who are the figures of authority? Who are figures in fear of authority? How does authority operate? Elaborate on the relationship between authority and identity.
8) Discuss the various endings of the readings: Naghib Mahfouz’s Zabaalawi, Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Tagore’s Punishment are some examples. What is the meaning of the ending, and how does the ending reflect on the story as a whole?
9) Creative Assignment Poetry: Create a Poetry portfolio. Your portfolio must contain 6 poems, two for each poet we have covered in class. The poems should be inspired by Blake, Ghalib, and Yeats. Follow closely the rhyme, patterns, language, symbolism and style of the poet. You will be graded on how well your poems reflects the original poet’s style and voice as well as your own originality of thought and ideas. Please include a two page essay at the end, describing your poetic process, difficulties you might have encountered with writing the poems, and how your poems reflect the themes of the poets Blake, Ghalib and Yeats.
10) Creative Assignment Narrative: Take a narrative from class, and reimagine the ending. Make sure that your reimagining takes into account the original author’s voice, style, narrative techniques, subject matter, imagery and tone. Some exemplary texts might be: Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Tagore’s Punishment, Tolstoy’s Death of Ivan Illyich. Please include a one to two page essay at the end, describing your process and your justification—why did you reimagine the ending in that particular way, and how does changing the ending change the meaning of the story?
