Chapter 7 (Health and Reproductive Justice) 8.Understand and be able to give examples of each of the following key concepts in terms of the politics of health: equity, androcentrism, medicalization, stereotyping, corporate responsibility. 9.What is/was the “global gag rule” and what have been its consequences? 10.What are the reasons why women might want to control their fertility? 11.Discuss policies that aim to protect a women’s right to choose. Chapter 8 (Family Systems, Family Lives) 12.Briefly define the following terms: kinship, monogamy, polygamy, polygyny, polyandry, nuclear family, extended family, multigenerational family. 13.What is marriage equality? What is the current status of marriage equality in the U.S.? At the federal level? State level? 14.What does it mean to say that although the meanings and practices of motherhood are socially constructed, in contemporary U.S. society these meanings are conflated with notions of innate, biologically-programmed behavior? Chapter 12 (Religion and Spirituality) 15.What is the Southern Baptist controversy and how does it illustrate the plight of women in religion? That marginalized women would stay in this institution demonstrates what? 16.Explain in your own words what it means to say that religion is an institution that may simultaneously oppress and empower? 17.Give examples of religious laws that constrain women. How do these laws work through families and marriage? 18.Who are Santeras? How are they granted power in their communities? PART TWO Answer any one question in 15-20 sentences. This answer is worth 50 points. You can cite from any reading in the textbook. Make sure you give the page numbers. Again, using textbook readings will give you better points. Additionally, you can use outside readings if you wish. 1.Recall a recent movie you have watched and analyze the gender politics. What do you learn about the ways gender norms shape sexual scripts? 2.What is reproductive justice? Do you believe this is important? How do women suffer when society denies them reproductive justice? 3.What messages about gender and other systems of inequality and privilege did you get from your family when you were growing up? Don’t just list the messages – also analyze each one closely and weigh the pros and cons of each one. 4.Find one company and analyze their paternity and maternity leave policies: (a) how much time is allocated for paid and non-paid leave (b) what modifications will you make to support families? What are the consequences of this company’s policies for women and children? 5.Discuss an example of a social or cultural battle being fought right now that is cast in religious terms. 6.Page 654 of your textbook offers a poem called “God Says Yes To Me.” Summarize the poem and its main points. How does this resonate with your own life? Offer some critical thoughts. 7.If you are affiliated with a specific religion, research its history in terms of women’s rights. Are women ordained or accepted as religious authorities? Are there examples of religious fundamentalism in your religion?
