Culture change may can occur from within a culture via innovation or invention, or it may occur with contact between two societies. Contact with members of other societies (e.g., through colonization or international development) has led to fundamental changes to local societies and gender relations. Although some changes may be beneficial or benign other changes may see local or Indigenous peoples dominated by colonizers and detrimental social changes occur including an emergence of gender inequality where previously gender relations were equal.

The aim of this assignment is to investigate how various forms of culture change (e.g., social, economic, and political forces) can impact or alter gender relations in a given society.

Using Google Scholar, enter the search term “gender relations AND culture change” and locate an article of interest to you regarding the impact of a change or shift in a given society and its impact (or reinforcement) of gender relations or gender ideology. Choose and sum up one article following the grading criteria outlined below. CHOOSE TOPIC

What change occurred within this local society (e.g., colonization, economic development, access to the internet, etc.)? How are the changes seen to impact the society?
