As a peacemaker and a student of ethics thinking, your local media outlet contacts you about joining a discussion about the right to die and a family dispute about removing life support. You mention that it sounds like the Terri Schiavo case. The media rep says, “why don’t you make your statement by describing the ethics behind what happened in the Schiavo case?” You agree and do a little research about the people in the case.
In studying the Terri Schiavo case, you find Judge Greer, representing the legal/government profession and the judge in the Schiavo case, Dr. Victor Gambone, representing the medical profession and the physician caring for Terri for 5 years, and Father Frank Pavone, representing Terri’s church and the one who cared for Terri’s spiritual life.
In a Discussion post, state what you think would be the professional ethical perspectives coming from each of the represented professions (legal/government, medical, religious), and the choice they would make about withdrawing life support. Include what you think each one would say and their rationale. Also, state how you think they could come to an agreement on the right course of action.
