Your essay should evaluate these chapters’ titles and content. Take into account the information in first chapter of Going to the Source and then deal with the following problems:
• How did Europeans imagine the people and animals of the New World? Although some of the
images in Going to the Source were clearly based on fantasy, what purposes did such fantastic
depictions serve?
• Did the images of animals and people change over time? Why? (You will need to pay attention
to the dates that the images in Going to the Source were published.)
• On each of the continents discussed in the first and second chapters of America’s History,
people had belief systems regarding spiritual powers. How did these belief systems have
impacts on the ways Africans, Europeans, and Native Americans interacted when they first
met? When they began to live together?
