My report is on William Seymour
Write a report on a particular historical figure covered in the course and choose from the list that will be provided on Canvas. Only those Christian figures covered in the course will serve as options for study (Just in case you are wondering – CS Lewis is not an option). The paper will focus on a primary resource(s) and your critical engagement of material written by the historical figure directly rather than someone’s assessment of their writings. Students will post their proposed historical figure and an idea of the primary resource(s) they intend to read for pre-approval on the Canvas Discussion Board so the professor can approve them. – DEADLINE is 1-Week prior to DUE DATE! Only papers covering the previously agreed upon historical figure via Canvas Discussion Board communication will be accepted. Any changes to the topic/ historical figure must be submitted and approved by the professor in writing. Basically, each student will report on a different historical figure. Students will receive EXTRA CREDIT for in-class presentations by sharing a summary of each section of their paper in class or on video via Canvas. No Powerpoint is needed or required!
A brief sketch of the major ground to cover in this 5-page paper (no more than 7p.):
(3 pages) (50 pts) Break down the meaning of the primary resource (the writing/ letter/ book/ etc) or provide the essential flow of the arguments/ major moves that are being made in the document.
What was the meaning, message, and intent of the work? Why was it so important? What impact did it have?
Is there some sort of Biblical, theological, or spiritual contribution made by what he/ she created, wrote, preached, carried out, and if so, why/ how?
In the end, place him/ her in one of Foster’s Christian typologies: the one that you think he/ she represents: Contemplative, Holiness, Social Justice, Incarnational, Evangelical, Charismatic.
Explain why you placed him/ her in that tradition. What are the characteristics of the tradition?
How did he/ she represent those characteristics in his/her person, ministry, profession? Be explicit and make sure to connect the dots, so to speak. Provide some illustration or key example to support your reasoning.
You can provide a little biographical/ background information in terms of an insightful story and a little factual data but not too much.
Include your personal reflection. How did you feel, what did you think about the historical figure? Were you inspired, encouraged, saddened, or confused? Possibly conduct a strengths and weaknesses analysis if this is applicable. Are there things here that you agree/ disagree with and if so, why?
