Did you know the United States produces nearly 20% of the worlds beef? I sat down to have a conversation with CEO Rodger Guess of Guess Cattle Company LLC to learn what goes on behind the scenes of operating a cattle nursery of 13,000 head of cattle, organization communication among 80+ employees, how he manages over three ranches, farming orchards of orange trees, breeding Angus cattle, and raising thousands of Holstein bulls for the consumption of beef and their use of byproducts. I chose to sit down with Mr. Guess because during this unprecedented time, cattle operations are deemed essential and are a staple to citizens health regarding protein consumption and household products that are produced from the cattle. “This is not your average 9-5 job” Mr. Guess stated. This is his lifestyle. There are no days for rest when raising one day old calves who rely on employees of the company to ensure their health, nutrition, and safety are always being taken care of.

Mr. Guess runs over three ranches. This caught my attention as each of these locations are very different atmospheres from the next. Employees are not scheduled at every location rather; each ranch has their own roster of employees with subgroups that divide the labor. The type of management ran on these ranches are bureaucratic with autocratic leadership styles. Each individuals job is highly important and must be carried out with utmost care and details. These men are feeding live baby calves. A minor mess up in the milk barn can cause hundreds of babies to be diagnosed with scours and possibly die which results in a loss of profit for the company.

I asked Mr. Guess about what he does well in his operation and what he could work on. A few things he mentioned he does well is as a CEO he is not locked up in the front office all day. He gets on the level of his employees at sunrise till sundown working extensive labor conditions.

According to an article from Informa, titled How dairy operations can find, retain employees stated that “Employees need to feel part of the team and each employee needs to feel like they can talk with management (at various levels) without retribution. But employees should expect appropriate consequences when mistakes, or poor choices, are made.”

When speaking of managing a ranch, we should think of managing the “whole” or every aspect of it and recognize that, when we change any part, that part is integrally linked to and affects the whole. Not only that, but each part affects and is affected by the others.

As animal breeders, operations like Mr. Guess’ invest lifetimes trying to find outliers to the complex relationships he works with.
