Discuss what the results of these nominations were (i.e., confirmed or not, easy confirmation or close vote?) and why.

Presidents take several factors into account in choosing nominees for the U.S. Supreme Court. Senators, in turn, also take a number of factors into account in deciding whether to vote for or vote against confirmation of Supreme Court nominees. Write an essay in which you discuss the factors that President Bush took into account in nominating John Roberts, Harriet Myers, and Samuel Alito to fill recent Supreme Court vacancies. Discuss what the results of these nominations were (i.e., confirmed or not, easy confirmation or close vote?) and why. What factors did senators take into account in voting in favor of or against these nominees? Also discuss the factors that President Obama took into account in nominating Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to fill Supreme Court vacancies. Discuss what the results of these nominations were (i.e., confirmed or not, easy confirmation or close vote?) and why. What factors did senators take into account in voting in favor of or against these nominees? Finally, discuss the the factors that President Trump took into account in nominating Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh to fill Supreme Court vacancies. Also, discuss the circumstances under which the vacancies for Gorsuch and Kavanaugh were available for President Trump to fill.  Discuss what the results of these nominations were (i.e., confirmed or not, easy confirmation or close vote?) and why. Examine the federal and state judicial selection systems.

Federal judges are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Once they are confirmed, federal judges (effectively) serve for life, i.e., until they choose to retire. In contrast, many states including Texas choose judges through partisan elections. They serve a fixed number of years and then they are required to run for reelection if they wish to remain in office. Other states use a version of merit selection in which judges are initially appointed by the governor after being recommended by a merit selection board. The judges then serve a short term and then must run in a retention election to keep their positions. In your opinion, which of these selection methods is best? Why? Also, to what extent are these methods political (or politicized)? Before offering your opinion, you should read the textbook chapters and lecture notes that are relevant to this topic. You may also rely on other sources. If you do, then cite these sources. ———————— **lecture notes by: Dr. Craig Emmert

What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patient’s background, lifestyle, and culture?

***** Citations Required **** **** APA 7 ***** References attached Discussion: Diversity and Health Assessments May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained—from her observations and her personal experience as a black woman—that many African American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “Many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012). Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity. In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds.   CASE STUDY 1 JC, an at-risk 86-year-old Asian male is physically and financially dependent on his daughter, a single mother who has little time or money for her father’s health needs. He has a history of hypertension (HTN), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), b12 deficiency, and chronic prostatitis. He currently takes Lisinopril 10mg QD, Prilosec 20mg QD, B12 injections monthly, and Cipro 100mg QD. He comes to you for an annual exam and states “I came for my annual physical exam, but do not want to be a burden to my daughter.”   To prepare: ·       Reflect on your experiences as a nurse and on the information provided in this week’s Learning Resources on diversity issues in health assessments. ·       Reflect on the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient assigned to you. ·       Consider how you would build a health history for the patient. What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patient’s background, lifestyle, and culture? Develop five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks. ·       Think about the challenges associated with communicating with patients from a variety of specific populations. What strategies can you as a nurse employ to be sensitive to different cultural factors while gathering the pertinent information?   Post: §  Intro §  Explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. §  Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks. §  Conclusion       References Ball, J. W., Dains, J.
