An E-Poster (more information in the attachment)

Students will create an E-Poster to show their understanding of the application of a nursing model to a specific clinical problem.

Identify the clinical issue: Prevention of urinary tract infection in elderly person with urinary catheter.

Justify how this model can be relevant to address the selected clinical issue and link the models elements with the Codes of Conduct and Nursing Standards. Please incorporate the 6Cs in that issue with one or two sentences and pictures. Use 6Cs when you create the e-poster. 6Cs: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment.

Assessment Instructions

Minimum four references are required. Your articles must be 10 years old.

Twenty-one nursing problems
Faye Glenn Abdellah is recognized as a leader in the development of nursing research and nursing as a profession within the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) and as an international expert on health problems. She was named a living legend by the American Academy of Nursing in 1994 and was inducted into the National Womens Hall of Fame in 2000 for a lifetime spent establishing and leading essential health care programs for the United States. In 2012 Abdellah was inducted into the ANA Hall of Fame for a lifetime of contributions to nursing and to honor her legacy of more than 60 years of accomplishments that live on nationally and globally (ANA, 2012).
Abdellah has been active in professional nursing associations and is a prolific author, with more than 150 publications. During her 40-year career as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. PHS (19491989), she served as Chief Nurse Officer (19701987) and was the first nurse to achieve the rank of a two-star Flag Officer (Abdellah, 2004) and the first woman and nurse Deputy Surgeon General (19821989). After retirement, Abdellah founded and served as the first dean in the Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
Abdellah (2004) considers her greatest accomplishment being able to play a role in establishing a foundation for nursing research as a science (p. iii). Her book, Patient-Centered Approaches to Nursing, emphasizes the science of nursing and has elicited changes throughout nursing curricula. Her work, which is based on the problem-solving method, serves as a vehicle for delineating nursing (patient) problems as the patient moves toward a healthy outcome.
Abdellah views nursing as an art and a science that mold the attitude, intellectual competencies, and technical skills of the individual nurse into the desire and ability to help individuals cope with their health needs, whether they are ill or well. She formulated 21 nursing problems based on a review of nursing research studies (Box 2.2). She used Hendersons 14 basic human needs (see Box 2.1) and nursing research to establish the classification of nursing problems.

Abdellahs work is a set of problems formulated in terms of nursing-centered services, which are used to determine the patients needs. Her contribution to nursing theory development is the systematic analysis of research reports and creation of 21 nursing problems that guide comprehensive nursing care. The typology of her 21 nursing problems first appeared in Patient-Centered Approaches to Nursing (Abdellah et al., 1960). It evolved into Preparing for Nursing Research in the 21st Century: Evolution, Methodologies, and Challenges (Abdellah & Levine, 1994). The 21 nursing problems progressed to a second-generation development referred to as patient problems and patient outcomes. Abdellah educated the public on Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), drug addiction, violence, smoking, and alcoholism. Her classification framework for identifying nursing problems was used to determine how to reduce peripheral intravenous catheter infiltration to increase the longevity of peripheral intravenous catheters (Banks, 2015). Her work is a problem-centered approach or philosophy of nursing. Abdellahs papers are available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/manuscripts/msc.html (National Library of Medicine, 1988).

Group Project

This week you will be assigned to a group and be given a domain to develop/discuss applying all or some of the 7 core competencies. Group members need to assume AP roles (clinical and non-clinical) either by volunteering or being assigned by the group leader. A group leader must be decided and may be a nurse manager/nurse administrator, CNS, NP (maybe more than one and from different specialties), NI, and NE.CNLs and RNs may be also be part of the group scenario. All members are expected to demonstrate leadership knowledge and skills, but also must be willing to follow. Each group will demonstrate the core competencies and principals of transformational leadership in the group work. (See rubric). To ensure understanding of leadership styles, each group member will discover their own professional leadership style by an individual self-assessment online. Assignments and responsibilities should be equally assumed by group members. The final evidence of the group work will be power point presentation that discusses the scenario addressing the assigned domain, the roles and the outcomes. Please note that although a group project, individual grading rubric will be used to determine individual grades. (See below).

The masters prepared nurse demonstrates leadership in the four domains: the profession of nursing, clinical practice arena, health policy arena, and systems level. The impact could be found in health promotion, disease prevention/management, quality improvement and/or within management of a health system. In order to complete this assignment, each group member will complete an assessment about your leadership style and post to the group area their leadership style.

Use a democratic style (is my leadership style after assessment was completed) with group members who understand the objectives and their role in the task.

How to Become a Better Leader

In conclusive remarks, search and agree upon a quotation from a library article related to leadership in an advanced nursing role and include with how it applied to your clinical decision/management issue of your assigned domain. Leadership journals Library are The Journal of Nursing Scholarship or Nursing Leadership Forum or the American Journal of Nursing, Journal of Nursing Administration, Nursing Administration Quarterly, Nursing Management or Health Care Management Review

Group Topics:

What would they need to know to best represent your concerns?

For this paper, I want you to consider your own standpoint as a voter. In a paper of at least 500 words and no more than 650, define your standpoint as a potential voter. Imagine that your audience is the series of politicians who may be vying for your vote. What would they need to know to best represent your concerns? What issues are most important to you and would prove to be persuasive? What are your “deal breakers”–the issues that are essential elements of their platform for you to consider voting for them?
